Yeah, the controls are really easy to remap with the dosbox mapper.
I set i up to WASD for movement + Space to jump and Q/E to look up/down in less than a minute.
The only issue with it it's when it comes to naming savegames, but since it's only a hand full of keys that get 'moved around' it's not really that hard to work around it.

Yes, you are missing something :) Just revert those dat files back to the backups of your original versions. They are only useful for providing the missing menu text, if you want to set the keys through the menus.

epmode: So I'm trying to rebind keys using the DOSBox remapper and it's going pretty well.. But is there any way to get anything resembling mouselook? I don't even care if I can't look up or down, I'd just love to use the mouse to turn without having to hold the right mouse button down.
I suppose I should just bind horizontal turning to A and D instead of strafing, sigh.
Unfortunately not. The only way to get mouselook is to keep both mouse buttons pressed and it only works if there is nothing interactive under the mouse cursor. Perhaps a future version of DOSBox will allow reassigning mouse events and mouse buttons, but for the moment your kind of setup is pretty much the best that can be done.I suppose I should just bind horizontal turning to A and D instead of strafing, sigh.

Thank you. Not sure how I missed that. Still would like to see the US though!

Damn it!
Coincidentally, I had just installed RotH to my hard drive and was using DOSBox when GoG release their version The weird part was their version run so much better than mine, so I deleted it. Now, I find out this is the UK version without the keybindings!
Ack. I could have maybe figured out their DOSBox settings on why my U.S. version was running so slowly :(

Just get the patch that phanboy4 has provided a link to. Puts the US executable in with the UK game and it still works fine plus allows you to map key bindings.Coincidentally, I had just installed RotH to my hard drive and was using DOSBox when GoG release their version The weird part was their version run so much better than mine, so I deleted it. Well, I hear you about the patch, but I failed to finish the game the first time due to a graphics bug. Of course, this was proto-Internet time and updated drivers weren't plentiful for my video card. I'd hate to play the game and then run into some weird bug due to an unofficial patch.

There is an alternate way to rebind the keys through DOSBox if you are not comfortable with the patch: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/realms_of_the_haunting/tips_for_beginners
But from what I understand the patch should pose no problem (Though I didn't try it myself yet).

Thank you, Lafazar. I took a different path and installed the original U.S. version, copied the disk files to my hard drive and convinced the game to read everything from there (instructions are online that state how to do this without using ISOs). Then, I copied the DOSBox configuration used by GoG and run the game using that config file.
So, right now, I have both versions installed and I'm trying to see if there is any real difference. I'm just worried that GoG may have patched bugs or something that could bite me/us later. Being able to re-map the keys in the U.S. version, bundled with the mouse-look utility mentioned in another thread, seem to make this the better choice if everything is equal between versions.

The US-version seems to be the latest version of this game. It looks to me like GOG simply got the final European version from Funcom and didn't patch it further. I would be very interested if you find any differences between the two versions, for example I am still wondering what lowering the hearts does in the brain maze.

Any chance you can give a bit more information on how to do this? I have my original US copy, and would love to use it over the version that GOG has, if it's in fact a newer version of the game.So, right now, I have both versions installed and I'm trying to see if there is any real difference. Okay, this is what I did following a site I can't link since it's blocked from work (can see it, but not access it). Any inaccuracies is due to this being written from memory. If you search for 'Realms of the Haunting DOSBOX', you will see a link with Old Classic - Realms of the Haunting - World 1-1 which details most of this for you. They neglected a bit on the CONFIG.INI.
1) Install the latest version of DOSBox.
2) Start DOSBox, then mount your destination directory (C:\Games for me) with 'mount c c:\games', then mount your CD-ROM 'mount d d:\ -t cdrom'
3) Change to your D: drive and run the install.exe choosing the Maximum install with the \ROTH directory being your install directory (removing INTRPLAY). Follow the prompts and let it auto-detect your sound. Everything should test successfully, then exit the installation.
4) Go to your ROTH directory and create an HD directory. Copy the entire contents of Disk 1 to this directory. In \ROTH\HD, you will see a GDV directory.
5) For Disk 2-4, go into their \GDV directory and copy all of the files to \ROTH\HD\GDV. When prompted about the duplicate file, just select Don't Copy.
6) In \ROTH\HD\DATA, you will see a FILELIST file. Open it with Notepad.
7) You'll see all of the DISK#={ } files separated out. We're going to "trick" the game into thinking everything is on Disk 1. Scroll down to DISK2={ and delete this line. Additionally, you will delete dbase300 & dbase500 (doing this from memory...should be the only dbase files listed here) and tunnwarp. Then, scroll down and delete the closing }. NOTE: You do NOT delete any files from the DISK1 listing.
8) Repeat this for Disk 3 and Disk 4 listings leaving the final } at the bottom to close out DISK1={.
9) In the /ROTH main directory, there is a CONFIG.INI file. Make the entries match the following:
SourcePath=C:\ROTH\HD
DestinationPath=C:\ROTH
At this point, you just run DOSBox, mount only your C:\Games drive as C: (as shown above) and change directory to \ROTH and run roth.exe. This was working fine, but I went a little further using some of the GoG settings (just in case their dosbox setup was tweaked/better).
Since I have the GoG version, I took their dosboxROTH.conf file and copied it along with the \DOSBox directory (probably not necessary) to my \ROTH directory. Finally, I copied their desktop short-cut created when installing the UK version and altered it to match my pathing for the U.S. install. I also updated the dosboxROTH.conf dosbox file to change its path information to match mine.
