Hi Everyone,

I have been playing ROTH all day today just ther same as I did when I first had the game many years ago it's such a great game.
However, twice during play I have lost the FMV sound and the only way I could get it back was to use system restore.
Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone suggest a possible cause and fix?
I can't give you any more information other than I was doing a lot of reloading of a save on the last occasion so, possibly something became corrupted.
Apart from the FMV sound all the other sounds were ok.

Thank's
Don

A few questions:
What do you mean by system restore? Loading an earlier game or doing an actual Windows System Restore?
Does restarting DOSBox help?
What is your processor? You can find this out by going to Start->Control Panel->System

A little tip: If saving and reloading (and maybe restarting the game) helps to solve the problem then you can watch all previous cutscenes again from the save/load menu:
-Go to the inventory
-Click on the Disk symbol
-Press "m" or click on the "Realms of the Haunting" logo

I can't help, but you should probably provide more information about your system: OS version, sound card, and drivers would all seem pertinent.

Hi,
Sorry it was late and I forgot to be more specific
System Vista Ultimate 32bit
Processor intel quad core Q9550 2.83GHz
Sound soundblaster Creative x-fi
Display Nvidia GTX 280

When the problem first occured I tried the following
(Just a note, this also affected the sound in the opening credits all FMV clips worked but no sound, so the problem is a "blanket effect" to the whole program rather than a specific save)
Actions taken

Close down and restart ROTH - did not work
Reload earlier saves - did not work
Reboot PC - did not work
Reinstall ROTH over existing copy - did not work
Then using windows system restore - worked
What I did not try was uninstalling and reinstalling ROTH as I could not find a save file and did not want to lose my saves.
I have not looked into the option of doing anything with the DOS box settings

That's a pretty bizarre error. I have no idea what might be causing this. To make completely sure: Only the sound in the cutscenes in ROTH is affected and nothing else? So you have sound during gameplay in ROTH and in other programs or games?

Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard?

One thing you can try is changing the sampling rate in DOSBox by editing "dosboxROTH.conf": look for options called "xxxrate=22050" and change them to "xxxrate=44100" (where xxx can stand for various things including nothing).

I ran into this same problem. For me, it was a weird little error;

Go into the folder Realms of the Haunting is installed in. In there, find the folder "ROTH". In that folder, look for ROTH.ini. There should be a line

MovieAud=ON
or, MovieAud=OFF

If it reads OFF, change it to ON.

This was my problem, it somehow got flagged as off while I was playing, I changed it and now it works fine, I hope it works for you.

Sound was only lost for the movies everything else worked ok all my drivers are up to date however when it does happen again I will try your suggestion.

That seems a possible solution I will try it next time the problem occurs

I'm encountering the same issue. In the course of playing the game, the 'MovieAud' setting somehow keeps switching from ON to OFF.

I'll let you know if I can figure out what is causing it to happen.
OK, I figured out what was happening (in my case, at least).

The F2 key is supposed to only toggle subtitles, but whenever I turned off subtitles, the game was turning off movie audio as well (and pressing F2 a second time turns them both on again as well).
Hi,

I thought I had found the answer as I got the FMV sound back using another method but now I have the same problem as Beckett, I can only hear the FMV sound if the subtitles are turned to on.
I'm wondering if it is some change in the config file or possibly a DOSbox setting however, as I've never played with DOSbox settings before I'll start with the main program files.
I made a copy of all the files when the sound was working fine so I shall start by doing some comparisons.

You can toggle the speech audio and FMV audio in the game menu. It's in Settings->Subtitle Settings of all places.
Hi,

Does anyone know where the game saves are located?

Thanks
Don
Hello all

Must ask I have been playing playing realms of the haunting for a few weeks, I like the sound affects especially the voices you in the tower has anybody been able to find a way of getting these sound affects out of the game?

Dear Allistair,
for a long time I've been wondering the same and trying to find ways to access the audio data, doing research across message boards and such. The files I was able to extract are all incomprehensibly garbled. Hence I helped myself by recording the in-game audio, including the voices of the Tower, which I uploaded onto my ROTH wiki.
Additionally, Sascha has kindly provided some of the sound effects via his unofficial fansite for the game.

But if somebody around here was able to find a more viable solution in the meantime, please feel free to enlighten us!
