I hate the character generation process in this game.

Actually, that's not entirely true - I'm having fun with it - BUT I'm a little annoyed at the fact I'm pigeon-holed into certain stereotypes and I'd like to change some of the values of my skills.

Can anyone direct me to a save game editor? And would it crash or otherwise hurt my game if I switched, for example, my Thorwalian's axe value with his sword value?

Also, I remember reading about some kind of mod for this game that let you have more than 6 party members? Does this even exist?

I had similar problems and wanted to adjust some things that I would have chosen immediately, had I known the rule system a bit better. But now I'm several hours into the game and don't feel like restarting just because I had no idea what a certain spell does (no manual in my version of the game).

Anyway, what you want to do is rather easy and won't break anything. Just get a hex editor and load up any savegame. Search for the name of your character, and refer to the following list of offsets:

It's in German, but should be easily translatable (you'll most likely be interested in "Eigenschaften" [your heroes' basic values] and "Talentwerte" [your talent points]), and all you really need are the offset values anyway.

If you're new to the game, this offers a nice way to start a game with your own first character without having to completely restart if you find out you're missing some crucial skill in order to progress further. It should be fairly obvious that it has also the potential to completely ruin your experience, so I wouldn't make any superhuman changes in any character.

But seriously, would you rather have newcomers to the series give up after 20 minutes or give them the means to keep on playing for a while and become invested enough so that they play their second game for realz?

I hexed my save games since I wasn't aware of the rules when creating my characters - which I think is fair. And now I love the game and am thinking about starting over with my very own characters.

So yeah, kids these days :P

Yeah, I use that, too. But more often than not I rely on Cheathappens' trainers, or hack 'em myself via Tsearch. Thanks for the heads up, yo.

If you can't find what you're after in savegame edits or offset files, it usually does wonders to pull out a memory state hacking program. I tend to prefer Memory Hacking System by L. Spiro for that sort of thing. In my case, I wanted a Warrior with a maxed out Violent Temper on creation. Berserker time!

It's a little more technical on approach than downloading specific trainers or programs, but you can come up with your own cheats/hacks on games with relative ease. Including workarounds for race/class restrictions on skills, that sort of thing.
