Okay. I found the alternate DosBox config file for the EGA version of QFG1. How do I command DosBox to run it instead of the VGA config? (I don't use the Start Menu when installing).

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

There is a shortcut file for the QFG1 EGA installed already. It's either in the start menu under gog folders (if you do regular installation), or you have to find it in the folder you installed the games to.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The shortcut is an icon file in my installation. So I finally decided to edit the DosBox config by copying in the alternate autoexec config for EGA. I made a copy of the VGA config in case I decide later to play the game in that iteration.

Alternately, I suppose one could alter the target in the shortcut.

There should already be two different icon shortcuts. One for each version.
