Just in case you missed it, the only officially non-VGA-ed game in the series, Quest for Glory II : Trial by Fire has a freeware point & click remake by AGD Interactive.

Save-compatible with the rest of the series. However bear in mind that just like the QFG1 VGA re-release the remake is not a complete and perfect replica of the original game with updated graphics.

They also have VGA Remakes/Redux of Kings Quest I - III (II is considered a re imagining as it diverges from the original story and gameplay a little bit).

It's also good to know that those remakes are free and have full endorsement by the IP holder.

Not to be "that guy," but I would like to encourage people to try out the original QFG2 before heading directly to the remake. I didn't like typing things out at first, but it honestly became my favorite in the series, typing and all.

There's a certain satisfaction in telling you character to do specific stuff instead of "using" everything. The EGA animations are quite fluid too, and the colors are used very well.

2 is my favorite in the series, both with and without typing. I love the vga remake even more than the original, it had adds a couple of sidequest-y things to do.

I actually came here specifically to mention this. I beat QFG II in EGA initially, and certain commands were a lot of fun, but the VGA version is still a great adventure game that won't break your immersion from VGA1, EGA2, VGA3.

Much like Panatheran, I want to be "that guy" and suggest to play QfG2 in its original incarnation.

Qf2G2 is probably my favorite part of the series but somehow, I just couldn't get into the VGA remake. But I felt the same way with the official QfG1 VGA remake.

So I suggest try EGA1, EGA2 first and they go to VGA1, VG2 - I'm pretty sure you'll feel the same way.

I think both the EGA and VGA games are equally good. If you don't mind repeating stuff too soon, I'd highly suggest playing both, but the EGA first.

I played the VGA version of 1 long before I found the EGA, so I've never really cared enough to play the EGA version. However, the EGA of QfG2 rivaled QfG4 for my favorite of the series long before the VGA remake came out. Now when I play I have to essentially flip a coin to choose which to go with.

The remake includes the option to play entirely with a text parser.

Another thing to note about the remake is that it includes expanded dialogue and character interactions straight from the Coles' original notes that they lacked the time and space to include in the original, which helps flesh the game out a great deal (the midnight conversations with Shameen and Shema at the inn for instance). It also has a completely revamped combat system and is easily the best and most challenging combat system of any of the games in the series, the fifth one notwithstanding (I feel I'm the only one who enjoyed V's combat though admittedly the pre-rendered scenery and zoomed-out perspective did get in the way).

I've played the QFG2 remake before. I didn't win it, but I did play for a few hours. It's a lot of fun, but I grew up on the text parser Sierra games and sort of dislike the Sierra games that don't have one. (This is why I've never finished VGA remake of QFG1 or Space Quest, despite those two being my all time favorite Sierra series.) It's also why I stopped playing the QFG series after 3.

However, if you want to try the remake QFG2, I'd recommend playing the original first, just as I sort of feel like that's how you're supposed to play it. A friend of mine used to accuse me of elitism for that attitude. Maybe, maybe not; however, it is how I feel.

There _is_ a nice easter egg in the QFG2 remake where you can fight a 5th kind of elemental. I was amused by that. (No spoilers, just in case.)

EDIT: The post previous to mine (which I somehow apparently missed originally) mentions you can play with a text parser. I must have missed that option when I played. You can probably ignore a chunk of this message now. Oops. :/

^Actually, double checking again, it seems that the text parser option applies to the dialogue system only (last I played it it was with the parser/point-'n'-click combo). The cool thing about it though is that you can inquire characters about certain topics not available in the p-n-c dialogue trees.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who recommends playing the original first, and then the remake!
