I,m playing as a paladin and apparently I must talk to the domovoi to get the doll and the domovi is supposed to appear in the at night. I,m on day 15 though and the domovoi still hasn,t appeared. According to what I,ve read here it,s possible to miss the Domovoi event and make the game unwinnable. Does this mean that my game is screwed and I have to start all over again?
To my knowledge, he appears there every night until you solve his quest. Have you looked in the right place? He can be found above the fireplace in the main room, after midnight, when everyone else goes to sleep. I usually find him right after midnight. Try re-entering the main room multiple times, maybe that will make him appear.
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
It's also possible that you missed a conversation with someone that triggers the domovoi to appear. I believe you have to talk to Tanya's parents (the innkeepers) over and over until they tell you about her. Talk to them every chance you get and then check for the domovoi.

You might also have to overhear crying or a conversation between her parents - I think it takes place at night. Try listening at doors downstairs.

It's been a few years since I played last, so I may not be right on everything above, but I *think* it's right.

I'm pretty sure you're right! That's what I remember too, first you talk to the innkeeper & wife during the day, second you wake up in middle of the night and overhear them talking about Tanya, then third you wake up during the night and when you go downstairs the Domovoi (small blue creature) will talk to you.

I also think you need to help the Domovoi first, before he'll give you the doll.

Thanks for the confirmation. And I think that after hearing the crying/conversation at night, you have to talk to innkeeper and his wife again the next morning. I think the domovoi will show up after they finally tell you about Tanya. And yes, you're right that you have to help the domovoi, before he helps you.
Well, according to the Sierra Help-pages http://www.sierrahelp.com/Games/QuestForGlory/QfG4Help.html you are indeed screwed If you don't talk to the Domovoi before day 5! I decided to swallow the loss and re-start the game and I can now confirm that the Domovoi appears in the Inn right from day 1. And he doesn,t wake you up or anything, you must wait untill midnight before he appears.

That's a bug in some versions of the game, according to that website you posted. It also says that for most bugs it's primarily the floppy disk version that is affected, but it doesn't say if this is one of those. I know I've gone long past day 5 before and still gotten the domovoi to show up, and I always play a Paladin. But it's moot now, since you've already started over.

Just curious, are you playing the GOG version of this game? If so, it's fully patched and should not have any bugs, including the dreaded Error 52. I haven't played my GOG copy yet, though, so I can't say that from personal experience.
Error 52 isn't exactly a bug, and it isn't something that can really be patched out; it's avoidable by keeping the Dosbox clock speed down, though.

(Funnily enough, it's one of the things that WASN'T an issue with the DOS floppy disk version.)

I haven't played the GOG version yet, though I've played QFG4 many times. But in the GOG version there is a patch and the readme for the patch says:
This non-Sierra update is one of NewRisingSun's script level timer bugs patches.
Fixes:
- "Error 52" in swamp with "Chernovy"
(Obviously, it fixes other errors, too, but I edited those out of the quote.)

Since I haven't played this version yet, I can't vouch for that, but they claim it's fixed. You do have to apply the patch before starting your game, though, or restart it.

Ah, I'm glad to stand corrected on that point. The issue comes down to the scripting engine being based on timings that were reasonable at release but not so much within a few years. Slowing down the emulator would prevent the problem from manifesting if you haven't got a fix like that; there are plenty of others scattered throughout the game though.

The first one that someone is liable to see is the path crash: if you're walking down the path outside of the cave and the game crashes when you start to slip, you've got speed problems.

As for the domovoi, I didn't always visit him early on and didn't get stuck for not doing so, so there's probably some other trigger involved in causing him to become unavailable (or starting the window in which he can be visited).

Yup, I,m playing the GOG-version. Except for some minor bugs and glitches, it has run just fine so far. (Apart from that damn Domovoi-bug of course!)

Interesting. I'll have to watch out for that Paladin bug when I play mine, then. I'm sorry you had to start over, but at least it's working fine otherwise. I don't remember ever encountering that problem before, so it's good to know about in advance. Thanks!

Yes, that patch claims to fix pretty much all the speed related problems. Here's the full list:
- Antwerp maze is no longer linked to the "Speed" slider setting (patch files 81.hep, 81.scr)
- "Error 47" at slime slope
- Ad Avis respawning after being killed
- Stamina use while crossing chasm hand-to-hand
- "Error 52" in swamp with "Chernovy"
- Wraith draining health
- Combat timing
- Missing mouse pointer when exporting character (endgame)
- Death screen animation
- Freezing in rm250 (Outside Adventurer's Guild with Igor) when using the Windows version
- Wisp animation

I don't remember ever hitting the domovoi bug either and I know I've gone long past day 5 before looking for him. But I talk to everyone repeatedly all the time in these games, so I wonder if it might be a conversation or overhearing the crying that has some sort of timer bug on it.

You know, I may be the only person alive that feels this way, but when I first played QFG4 and encountered Error 52, I actually eventually came to consider it the hardest puzzle in the game, rather than an error. I learned more about what I could and couldn't do with my old IBM PC from trying to find a way around that bug than any class could have ever taught me. :)

Oh, well, to look it on the positive side, the game will last longer now;) (This is one of the best games I've played!)

At least this bug is in-character!
