The game, so far is awesome but the sound track is not...it's terrible...In fact it's disturbingly bad!

I've turned the volume all the way down in the game's options screen but the slider is useless and the horrible soundtracks continue.

I also have this problem with the first Sqyrx....seems something to do with some DOS titles.

Is there a way to kill the music, yet keep the sound effects on?

I'd rather just have net radio on in the background while playing.

unfortunately there is not. There isn't much going on with the sound effects in anycase so you may just want to mute it. It does get better later in the series though.
Are we talking of same game? The music is fantastic.

Anyway, when played in ScummVM, music and sound effects can be controlled separately.
Have you been into the Baronette cave yet? The loud trumpet every 3 seconds that doesn't fit the music. I've actually never heard it before this release.
If you're playing the VGA versions you might want to check the Sound Card that is installed on the computer, the gog-release set them all to Roland by default, and they're not really the best. Try switching to General Midi Driver before you opt to turn the music off completely.

If you still don't like the music, I think you can set the sound card to none for the music and Soundblaster for sound effects so that should fix your problem.

The Sound Card is changed in the install file btw, you open it with dosbox.
GOG yet again set up the games to use Roland. Either use ScummVM, run install.exe in the game's folder (via DOSBox) to set the games to use Sound Blaster/General MIDI, or endure.

Aaand ninja'd.

From what has been said elsewhere, the problem is that the game's configuration is set to Roland by default, which does not work well in DosBox. You should be able to run the game's setup utility through Dosbox to change it to something else. (Sound Blaster is probably your best bet since it was the standard option at the time.)

Thanks, man. I actually had ScummVM installed and didn't realize I could use it with this. The sound is a million times better in ScummVM if you select Windows MIDI WAV Synth as your sound converter in ScummVM.

Also thanks to everyone else for pointing out that DOSBox.cfg is set to Roland and not Blaster. Think I might keep it in Scumm anyway - Seems to even look a little better.

It's not the DOSBox's sound setup that's wrong, it's the game's.

Ah, thanks for the correction.

That default sound setting was scrambling my brain - I have no clue how people were able to tolerate that way back when.
How does one change the sound settings for Dosbox? This is my very first experience with a Dosbox game, and the default music makes me writhe in agony.

Due to my newbieness, please provide clear step-by-step instructions.

Do you have dosbox? If not, dowload it. These games run off of a dosbox shell that is preconfigured. GOG should have set these games to soundblaster/adlib.

Anyways. Load dosbox. Mount the drive to the directory which contains the Quest for Glory games.

example: mount c c:\quest
(enter)
C:
(enter)

For example, to change the setting for Quest for Glory I VGA, do this:

cd questf~2
(enter)
cd vga
(enter)
install
(enter)
go to the music setting and select Soundblaster/ AdLib card or Compatible

Accept these choices and save configuration.

Please clarify this "mounting the drive to the directory". I specifically followed the "mount c c:\quest" instruction, but it just responds that it doesn't exist.

If you can't get it to work, this is a slightly easier way. By default, you would have got a dosbox folder installed along with all the QFG folders in the 'Quest for Glory Pack' folder. Open your dosbox folder in one window. Open the QFG folder of the game you want in another window. Click and drag the install file from the QFG folder ontop of the DOSbox file. Dosbox will run it for you then just change your music settings inside the install program.

There is an even easier way: Use ScummVM
