FlamingFirewire: Considering he made a new original album in 2008 (The Slip), and released it for free in a multitude of audio formats, maybe if we're lucky and it really is that simple, Trent Reznor might be able to wave the whole issue and allow GOG.com to roll the audio back to the way it was in their original release. Maybe someone should tweet him about this...
He also seeded the Broken and Closure torrents (allegedly.) Regardless, there is a big difference between giving free work to fans and giving free work to a for-profit company.

Even with the disk mounted as a virtual drive, I get no music with GL quake or Win Quake in windows 10.
Such a bummer.

pbaggers: I would assume something like "track02", "track03" and so on (Track 1 would be skipped). That's how it is with Darkplaces and other fan-made source ports that support .ogg playback. I believe it's also what GOG uses in their DOSBox wrappers for various other games.

Darling_Jimmy: That's a fine, educated guess, but it didn't work.
The filenames are MUSIC/Track24.ogg with various 2 digit numbers for the specific track.

EDIT: And the first track is Track02.ogg

Hmm, I named them Track02.ogg ... Track11.ogg and put them in the MUSIC folder. Maybe I have another problem. I'll give it a try on a proper Windows machine later and hopefully have better luck. Thanks.
Wow, this is lame. I guess I shouldn't complain, because frankly I'm still giddy with excitement that these titles have finally shown up here at all (I mean, it was certainly about time!). But it does seem a rather large oversight to forget to clear the music rights. It was, after all, one of the selling points of the game back in the 90's, and it's not quite the same without it.

It's also strange that they could include the CD images, but not the streaming audio. I mean, how is that then suddenly (legally) acceptable? Because the player has to pull some stupid complicated magic to get it to work? Not very customer-friendly.

Please fix this, guys. This game deserves to be sold intact. (I wonder who owns the soundtrack though, didn't Reznor go through a less than amicable split with his business partners a while back?)
How do I get the music to play in quakespasm? I have the files where I think they need to go. I managed to get the music working running the Steam version, but forgot how I did it.

Edit: Okay this is weird, I got the music working fine in the mission packs, but not the original game. Baffling.

The music plays for me, but I have burnt the CD and put in my optical drive :)

In my experience with windows 7, the virtual drive must be the first cd drive in the system.

I have two Hard drives and no optical drive. I changed the drive letter of the virtual CD Rom to D: and have the game installed to c:. Even If I try to start the music via the console, it says no CD in drive.

The music plays via the software I mounted it with and I have tried two other virtual disk software solutions.
Will these complicated legal issues be resolved in the future? Does Trent Reznor and/or some record company has the rights to the Quake 1 music? I would like to see the music back not to mention the expansion music from Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity.

OK it look like gog have renamed winmm.dll to _winmm.dll

So if you want to re-enable playing back the music from .ogg files it would seem that you need to do the following.

1. Mount the CDIMAGE game.gog with daemon tools or cd emulation software of choice.
2. rip tracks2 - track11 with CDEx (or other ripping software of choice) as ogg the "music" folder inside your gog quake folder as Track02.ogg - Track11.ogg
3. rename _winmm.dll to winmm.dll
4. run qlquake as normal from the icon and enjoy the music.

A little further tweaking will be and ripping the music from the expansion images will be required to get them playing the correct music but that should not be to hard.

The same ogg music files also work with quakespasm and it will automatically play the right music if you follow the instructions in Quakespasm-Music.txt

Its good to finally have a legal way to purchase Quake with the expansions and get all the music :-)

If people are still stuck I am sure if would not be that hard to create a .bat file that automatically rips the music from the iso images and saves it in the right place, now we know the required steps to make things work. But I don't have time to look at that at the moment.

This is for the Windows version? I'm cautious about wanting to buy this, to encourage GOG to solve this legal issue and "earn" a whopping $10 from me ;), but maybe this is worth it.

It would have been nice to warn people about this problem relating to the music in the game's description in the store page, sort of how Steam issues a notice when certain products will not work on 32-bit systems. I am a little bit disappointed with my purchase of this title because of this issue.
