Might sound silly but i am trying to run this in software mode. Fullscreen in software mode does not work for me. It produces an acid trip of colors which is typically due to running in the wrong color depth. However running software in windowed mode does not produce these results. Any ideas? Im looking around myself and will see if i can set something manually to get this running.
Go to C:\GOG Games\Quake II\baseq2

Open "config.cfg" with notepad

Look for line: set gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST"

Change it to: set gl_texturemode "GL_NEAREST"

Do it the same with al the other expansion packs and mods you want to play. Just edit the "config.cfg" in their folder.

Now it looks like the software renderer. But with the effects from the OpenGL version.
I think GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR is better.
Got it. Thanks! I think "GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR" is closest you will get to software, though both work. Thank you!

Have fun :-)
Nothing wrong with OpenGL or hd textures, but always prefer the original software renderer.

Pixels are awesome.

320x240 or 640x480? :D
quakespasm and execute gl_texturemode 1 for seeing all the crispy details (pixels). Try also qbism for an interesting "modern retro" view. Personally I love it.

Edit: Quake II Sorry... :(

I have my original disc still. Played this for the first time on my Pentium 166 with mmx and 16 megs of ram at 640x480. ;)

Back then the max resolution on the monitor was 1024x768. lol Can't remember if it was windows 95 or 98 though.

FWIW, the same guy who works on qbism super8 has also done some stuff for a Quake 2 software renderer: https://qbism.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6&sid=2bba03b00ef54d768216f07310c14ce8
Cool, that's how retro should look like. Not just a cheap imitation of the old times.
