Whenever I launch Quake II the screen is incredibley small. I tried all driver options and setting it to full screen but it either just did not work or gave me an error message. Increasing the resolution to 1600x1200 helped but not by much. I never had this sort of problem with the original Quake. I haven't modded the game or messed with its files in any way, I'm just wondering what am I doing wrong and what should I do to fix it?
Short Answer = Yamagi

Long Answer = Quake wasn't made with today's resolutions and computers in mind. To get it working well, I suggest a source port of Quake II called Yamagi.

It requires the original game files, but replaces the rendering engine and updates the game so that it overall works better.

Here's a link to Yamagi:
https://www.yamagi.org/quake2/

Scroll down to see the downloads.

I believe the files are clean, but I always do a virus scan on anything I download by using Virus Total. I suggest you do the same to be certain they're clean (not just with Yamagi, but everything).

Another thought: In old games, sometimes the + button would make the screen zoom in. Not sure if it does that in Quake II though.

Best solution = unofficial patch 3.24 (x86 but it also works for 64-bit systems.)

I personally didn't like Yamagi at all, and other source ports as well. So I strongly suggest to try out vanilla experience first.

You don't like source ports, so you recommend a source port?

I do recommend unofficial patch 3.24 to Quake II for vanilla experience. As far as I know it's not a source port.

Of course it is a source code as that is the term that is used for code modifications, although in strict sense that's wrong in this case because nothing has been ported (original platform Windows, current platform Windows). It is definitely not completely vanilla, although it is closer to vanilla than knightmare's other source port.

In that case please accept my deepest apologies for this misunderstanding. I thought it was a modification to original game (quake2.exe).

No problem. It is a modification of the source code of the original game. So is Yamagi Quake 2 which is mostly vanilla in the sense that the gameplay is not changed (much).

OT: I don't like the name “unofficial patch” because it implies that it is better/different than the other choices.

It least it was for me and tried Yamagi along with two other ports (forgot the name Quake2Max or something and a recent one with lighting effects). I don't usually suggest some cr@p out of the blue, prefer to do a little research and find the best solution for my taste. Unfortunately I'm a purist and in case of Quake 1 the best option was Fitzquake Mark V, and in this particular case of Quake 2 it was Knightmare's Unofficial Patch 3.24. And maybe a name is a bit misleading but it does changes absolutely nothing gameplay wise, only fixes.

Fair enough. I prefer Yamagi Quake II and Quakespasm because they are vanilla with many bugfixes. If anything gameplay wise is changed, it is a bug that should be reported.

The most obvious way to find problems in Quake 2 is playing coop. YQ2 is the most stable of them because so many invalid reads are fixed. The original game code (not the engine) is crap and it runs as native code (contrary to the VM approach of Quake 2 that is safer). Coop is worse than single player because it was added as an afterthought in a patch.
Topic starter, do not listen them all. Better way - by both Steam and GOG versions.

Until that you must redownload and reinstall offline version of Quake 2 GOG and laucnh it from GOG launcher. Dont forget to visit support page for 2 archives with fixed dll for expansion (GOG missed them).
after first launch, make sure you set up a proper settings.

hudfreegamer saying nonsense. And some local* real old-fags do not correct him. There is no problems with Quake 2, its a problems with current widescreen monitors. 1920x1080 is a less than old normal full-screen 1600x1200. Pay atention on numbers. Set proper settings, set "Keep aspect ratio" in video driver.
If you have 1360x768 - set a 1024x768 resolution. FullHD support only 1024p maximum.

If you still have problem and do not buy yet Steam version - google it mdf\mds quake image files. GOG version never be updated, just 2 separate dll fix - still wrong build that work only from lamo-created broken old GOG launcher.

I'm trying plating on steam, with the same issue. Can you help me with that? I tried KMQuake2, dind't work. Computers are not my forte.
What exactly your issue?
Steam is a good to combine both versions. Put missing content to it, add launch parameters cdpath ot something like that.

But in general, not matter what resolutions game been made for, matter what resolutions supported by your system\display and which one you chose. Widescreen display is worth at supporting higher resolutions. And Q2 didnt have 1280x968, so until you have 2k\4k you can set only 1024x768.
Well, the easiest way is to create a baseq2\autoexec.cfg file with these lines:

set r_mode "-1"
set r_customwidth "1920"
set r_customheight "1080"
set cl_widescreen_fov "0"
set fov "90"
