Try to rename winmm.dll to:

I you want music. Install the unofficial 3.24 ptach and move the music folder to baseq2 folder.

Hi everyone, I'm running Windows 10 Pro but can't get the Quake II Launcher to execute any of the games on the list. When I open the launcher and click any radio button nothing happens. I've downloaded and reinstalled the game from my account on GOG.com, also renamed the winmm.dll as it was suggested without any luck. So I would be thankfull if someone could give me a hint on what to do to make it work again.

I usually suggest using a source port. They improve compatibility. For Quake II, there's KMQuake 2, Yamagi, and Berserker..

Thank you for your reply but how do I set up a working shortcut with KMQuake 2 on my desktop if my folder is c:\GOG Games\Quake II?

Copy your Quake 2 directory. Name the copy KMQuake2

install KMQuake2 (the source port) into the KMQuake2 directory you just made (that has all your Quake 2 files in it)

Then, you'll create a shortcut of the KMQuake 2 executable file and put THAT on your desktop.

To create a shortcut

Open the location that contains the item to which you want to create a shortcut.
Right-click the item, and then click Create Shortcut. The new shortcut appears in the same location as the original item.
Drag the new shortcut to the desired location. (in this case, your desktop)

Hello and thank you for your help so far but now I've encountered another problem: Each time I click the shortcut it opens and then Windows displays the message "KMQauke 2 engine mod has stopped responding. Windows is looking for a solution to the problem". So I wonder what is the cause of the crash?

EDIT: I managed to get it up and run again after tweaking some settings in the ini.file so it's ok.

Same here. Setting the cfg file from opengl to software didn't help, since the bastard run nows on the tinyest screen ever! :D

I got it working now but I don't remember how. :P

Hello everyone!
If you can run game in safe mode then you could try:
1. download gldirect5_opensource and unpack to it to main folder
2. change 3dfxgl.dll to _3dfxgl.dll in Quake II main folder
3. unpack opengl32.dll to Quake II main folder and rename it to 3dfxgl.dll
4. launch Quake 2 with Safe Mode options
5. change video render from software to 3DFX OpenGL
6. relanuch game with standard Run option

Now it should work :)
It's a bit of a workaround and haven't tested it apart from being able to start a game and go through first mission but it seems to work. Instead of having 3dfx library you fake quake to use 3dfx interpreting with an open source opengl.

Cheers, mate! It worked a charm. Just one quick clarification for those who would come after me: The file you're looking for is opengl32.dll (not opengl3d.dll).
