Trying to get music to work in Quake 2. CD music is enabled in menu but doesn't work.
I tried making making a cd image of files and mounting that but that didn't work.
I was using a cd version with the latest patch that made it cd free then made image of cd and mounted that to get music back without any problems but can't get music with the GOG version.
This question / problem has been solved by P15GsVGimage
Specifically, which OS you are using with the Quake II music issue present?

I'm using Windows 10, and since installing the Anniversary Update, I'm having the same issue as well. Before that update, the music (either on the version 3.20 or the fan made 3.24,) would play it.

I'm on win 10 with anniversary update installed as well. Should have had that info in question.
The PC is a new skylake build but have a older PC setup as a win 7 machine. I think i already have it installed on that PC I'll see how that goes, I thought it might have been a win 10 update causing a problem at least everything else that was running on win 7 is working fine on 10 for me so far.

Thanks for reply

I tried using Yamagi but it didn't work for me. Plus the manual is so bloody confusing.

I use KMQuake II and it does the job. The music is there along with other cool features added in as well like FX particles and better UI.

I think that is not just Quake II, but also many other games that use winmm.dll

(Outlaws for example, that use .ogg files)

the music is there but it stops after a while
Has anybody really solved this problem?
It is not a fix to not install the anniversary update
Tried to rename the exe but it didn't work.

edit:
got it. Just copy the music folder into the baseq2 folder (the whole folder). After that Q2 has music again.

Yep i can confirm. (tested with unofficial 3.24 version)

Now i have removed music folder from Quake II folder and still works fine, so is needed only into baseq2 folder

I suggest to make a new official package (with official 3.20 version) of this game with this music "fix"

I tried copying just the music files into the baseq2 folder, and the entire music folder in there (as in the files are in the folder called music inside the baseq2 folder) and I'm not hearing music?

Are you trying yamagi or kmquake 2?

I tried kmquake 2 a long time ago but never really used the newer FX and features.
I think I went back to plain quake 2 because it started crashing enough to be annoying and I never tried any newer versions. In the future I'll give this another try.

As for installing yamagi I ignored the instructions except the music section.
All I had to do is extract anywhere then get the pak files from gog version and put them in the yamagi baseq2 rogue and xatrix folders then create music folder in same 3 folders. Then I copied music from GOG version to yamagi music folders and edited the file name of tracks from Track02.ogg to 02.ogg. Also to launch expansions just needed to make shortcuts Ground Zero is "quake2.exe +set game rogue" and The Reckoning "quake2.exe +set game xatrix" .
Hopefully this makes sense to anyone confused by the instructions
