once again GOG puts steam in it's place. I have just played a bit of the GOG version of Quake which runs on Nglide. So it will run on modern resolutions just fine and with Keyboard and mouse support along with the OST.

I just played both a bit of the Steam and GOG version. No surprises here the GOG is much better.
Of course Gog's better. :)
Multiplayer is working?
i'm guessing it is modded for release then. Quite a lot of mods out for Quake and Nglide.
Differences? I played the Steam version with the community patch and did not give me any problems, nor with the basic game or with expansions. The coop was working and also the music

We're talking about vanilla not the community patch.
No OST in GLQuake or Winquake. Same as Steam.

The sound is there. You just have to rename the _winmm.dll to winmm.dll and copy the appropriate files to the MUSIC folder. They should be named Track02.ogg, Track03.ogg and so forth.

The audio itself is in one of those cue files in the directory, that's in a different post in this forum. I haven't yet checked that.

Shouldn't have to work around to get music working in the game.
I have a big issue with Quake 1 on Windows 10 (Insider Build 10532):
When playing the Game everything is fine but as soon as I exit the Game my PC either freezes or provides me with a BSOD "VIDEO_MEMORY_ERROR". When I run the same Game from Steam and exit I don't have this issue. Not sure what is different between the Steam and GOG version. Maybe GOG uses NGlide and Steam not?

No userland programs should be able to crash the kernel, the problem is not in the GOG version or anywhere else than your OS or drivers.

Oh, good grief. The music hasn't been available in years, regardless of what one should or shouldn't have to do, the fact is that the licensing requires this. At least they haven't gone out of their way to prevent people from enabling it. They could easily have just removed the file completely.

You mean it's disabled on purpose? I thought the issue is that the original version uses CD Audio. So a "licensing issue" about the Music is the real "cause"?
Except the NoDRM is there anything else "technically" what differs from the Steam Version or any Extras or Bonus Content? I'd like to see a more "neutral" comparison instead of saying gog is the best version of course :)

Yes, they renamed the winmm.dll file to _winmm.dll and moved the music to a cue file that's not directly accessible to the Windows version. The version they launched was about 350mb, but the current version is 1.2gb. Basically, they had to include the disc images for the music rather than just ogg files.

It's a licensing issue of some sort. It's apparently OK for them to provide the files as they have done, but it's not OK for them to hook the Windows version up or to help us to do it ourselves.

I don't understand what the issue is, but it's been an issue for years with the Steam version.

Both editions are nice, but the GOG version has a really nice set of graphics. They've got the acceleration enabled, but it's dialed back far enough that the textures haven't gone all to hell either.
The inclusion of the CD images makes this a landslide victory. I believe every game should come with the original CD images. It just gives us tweakers more options to play around with.

The current situation might not be ideal, but it's so much better than not having any music at all or being forced to download the music illegally.
