If the music in the GOG version doesn't work, is there a simple way to get music for this game without creating CD's? I have downloaded a folder containing 11 mp3's and ogg files which are supposed to be the music for Quake.

The other query is: are there patches I need to install to enhance the GOG version of the game? I've found a "quakespasm" patch; should I use it? I'm running Windows 10.

QuakeSpasm is not a patch, it is a source port and I suggest you to use it for multiple reasons: first of all it offers a better support on modern systems, it adds support for widescreen resolutions, it contains many fixes and other improvements and it also solve the issue with game music.
Follow this guide to install it.
Or you can choose another souceport. Or no one.

I dont know why so many ppl say that music not work. Some of them on Win7, some on Win10. For some others music works.
For Windows 10 it depend on which Update Build installed, i guess? I dont get it how OGG music or AudioCD cant play. There is problem with music images starting from Vista (from SP1?) that it not looped between loadings in any game. But GOG usually do audiocd\game images only for bundled emualtors (DOS). For Quake 1 and Quake 2 as for most WIN games - GOG already ripped music to OGG. And i cant understand what another s88t security update it can be if Windows stop playing OGG game music.
-----------------
(btw, music stop playing in some games before new loading, but work as it must in some emulators (eg Sega Saturn emuls) - how Windows decide that this is vary differ application? Ofc DOS game with audicd in DOS emulator should work, but outside emulated or virtual machine workspace it still application that running in Windows shell with all that Win security updates - how it work, damned? Microsoft *magic*)
(for you understanding, i prefer emulate virtual CD image to virtual drive first, and then mount it in emulator - it still must be normal AudioCD for Windows and instead of some random DOS game it DosBox that work in same way - try load and loop music directly from CD - there is must be no differenes for Windows itself)
----------------

Any 3rd party links provide absolutely same things (open source libraries), just with mp3 files. GOG choose OGG. It work in same way, by same open source solutions.

Maybe someone use GOG Galaxy online builds? Even with fact that GOG prefer that builds, offline is better builded sometimes (less mistakes). And ofc with offline you can install whole package and know that there is no errors (if no one show up). With online downloading you always must do files check once or twice.
Fot offline - start installer as admin (that also disable Windows Defender + for any further process) and install games to path strongly like * X:\Games\Game-Name-2\ *. Anyway start games as admin.
For Galaxy online you should start Galaxy permanent as admin, install Galaxy to \Games\, games to \Games\, start games as admin if drectly from exe.

Dont forget to chacke game folders for additional build-in Configuration Utility-ies from developers or some from GOG. Start them as admin as well.

Third party antiviruss must be disabled manyally during installation or Galaxy downloding+verifying.
-------------
I still believe in some *noobishing*. Check Steam Hubs for Quake 1\2 expansions. There is a lot of players with problems starting addons. Even with fact that Steam started addons as it must be - already with game_addonname parametres. Still peoples there suggest manually adding that strings to exe links or installing sourceports or even some crap sourceports\faked patches\mods.
For un-official and additional content - it OK. But not just for fixing things that already work.

Thank you; I'll try the source port, but leave the music for when I'm feeling brave and very patient!

Thank you for all the info. I do use an offline PC (running Windows 10 v 1909) which avoids a lot of problems, and also use the GOG offline installers and not Galaxy.
