I've heard that the main go-to way to play Quake 2 on modern operating systems is with the Yamagi source port. Since I've managed to get Quake 1's soundtrack playing in its vanilla state by playing around a bit with the files (base game only, no such luck with the expansion packs), I've tried to do the same for Quake 2 and I still hear no music. I've only had music playing when Yamagi is installed.
Not that I have anything against source ports, but is there any way to get Quake 2's soundtrack playing in its vanilla state or do I have to use Yamagi or other source ports?

Yes!

In the folder where you have Yamagi installed, you will have a folder named baseq2, then in that one you need a folder named music then in that folder you need the music files! If they are not already there you need to get them from the place where you have the gog version of quake 2 installed and then make a little change.

Each file needs to be changed from Track##.ogg to just ##.ogg
Move music folder into baseq2 folder

FulVal: Move music folder into baseq2 folder
Does this require Yamagi or will most of the stuff provided in the GOG version be good enough?

PS: Sorry for the late reply, I was busy with stuff in my personal life.

Nope, also Vanilla version has this "problem"

Install only unofficial patch 3.24

Why also? Yamagi does not have that problem.

Yes, Yamagi has that problem, so you have to move that folder...
