I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-238DX Notebook PC

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics
AMD Athlon II 2.1 GHz dual-core processor P320
3GB DDR3 RAM (With over a GB of VRAM)
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit)

Granted it isn't the greatest PC of all time or anything, but it should be able to easily run this game at maximum settings according to most sources that I have looked at (including this very site).

requirements: Windows XP or Windows Vista, 1 GHz Processor (1.4 GHz recommended), 256MB RAM (512 recommended), 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (compatible with DirectX 9 recommended), Mouse, Keyboard.

My PC meets every single one of those requirements, so why in the world am I meeting such intense slowdown in parts of the game (Granted, it isn't constant & doesn't happen everywhere, but the fact that it is happeing at all is incredibly annoying). Even on some of the lower settings I am met with slowdown... granted nowhere near as bad, but still enough to be annoying (especially considering that this is a platformer).

I think there would be 2 things that could causing it to happen. All your hardware looks like it should be able to run it, no problem.

1. Windows 7 is yet to be supported by Psyconurts, so it could be something to do with that. However, this is highly unlikely, due to how recent the game is.

2. The other thing, which has a higher likely hood than the first one, is that, considering you are on a notebook/laptop, it could be an over heating problem.
The game is listed to work under Windows 7.

I had the same issue with the game on 7 64bit using a Radeon 5870.

This is likely an ATI video driver issue so nothing GOG can do about it.

Best to report it to ATI.
I doubt it is solely a video driver problem... I mean this game slows down to maybe 10 FPS (if that) at certain points (like for example the area where the submarine takes you to fight the lungfish).
I am having this very same problem, I have specs that run the game NO PROBLEM!
But this still happens, I think it's solely Win7's fault. (I have Win7 as well)
XXLaw, I doubt it's the fault of Windows 7. Windows has always been dependent on graphics drivers for graphical performance. If your machine runs games poorly in Windows 7, it's likely because the company that made your video card released crap drivers for Windows 7.

The game seems to be poorly optimized for PC. I've occasionally found games that run horribly on integrated graphics cards with power well above the minimum specifications. I suspect it's some combination of that and your drivers.

Have you installed the latest ATi drivers? Sometimes the drivers supplied by your laptop's manufacturer have poor performance built in to keep the laptop cool.

I'm telling you that its not the drivers.... I can play Borderlands with hardly no problems (on the highest settings I get slowdown, but only as much as I do on the lowest settings in Psychonauts).

Just because your drivers run a newer game flawlessly, that doesn't mean that they're not to blame if an older game has issues. It's not unheard of for an integrated video card to use a software layer for older technologies, and poorly programed graphics drivers definitely aren't unheard of. Newer games wouldn't be using the software layer, so you wouldn't run into the issues; if they do indeed reside in your driver. A poorly optimized software layer might cause what you're seeing.

Not saying that the driver is at fault; just saying that it's not necessarily that simple.
Hi!

Just in case it helps, I recently finished the game on Windows 7 (64-bit), with an ATI card and it also kept slowing down seemingly at random. It seemed to (very) temporarily fix it by alt-tabbing out of the game and back into it. I also tried telling my antivirus software to ignore the game's .exe file, just in case.

Sorry I can't offer a proper solution, but the above got me through it without tearing my hair out!
Turn off shadows.

Like I said... I was playing it on the lowest settings... that includes turning off the shadows.

Plus I got bored of it about 2 months ago & just quit playing it.

Need to change cpu affinity to using only one core on a dual core cpu. Had the same problem it worked for me.
Edit: Use this (imagecfg_gui_v1.1.exe) to change the affinity.

Just to add my two cents, I also had mysterious slowdowns in Win 7 64-bit with an ATI FirePro M5870 (an unusual and very recent card). Strangely, they tended to happen a lot in cutscenes during character closeups, particularly in the actress's mind (when talking to the set director). Similarly to Roberttitus, it happened regardless of settings, despite the game usually running fine on max.

Affinity didn't seem to do much; I have a quad-core system.

It did seem to be rather localized, so I just reduced the settings and lived with it on some maps; I've finished playing now.

Oh, and I did not have this issue in Win XP 32-bit with a FireGL T2.
Pretty sure its something with ati drivers. I never had this problem before, with windows 7 + ati 5730 on a notebook, but I came back to finish up the game, and experience these crazy slowdowns in the psyche wards. The only thing that has changed about my computer in that time, is that I did update the video drivers. I am going to try going back to older drivers and see if that fixes it...

And to the above naysayers, it's very common for updates to drivers to hurt compatibility with older games. Being able to run borderlands for example, makes sense, because the driver developers probably have borderlands and other unreal engine games in mind when they make optimizations. I doubt anyone at ati tests their updated drivers on Psychonauts :)
