This is just a post to explain the multiplayer architecture of the game, and what this means to GOG customers.
Our game does not rely on any third party services for any of its core multiplayer functionality, and will always be this way so the game can have full independence from any online system or store long into the future. We do however have optional Steam integration, and this was added so we could leverage the ability for mods of servers in multiplayer to ban people based on their username they purchased the game with, to provide a more hack free environment in open multiplayer, while still making sure we didn't deny our non Steam users any of the multiplayer functionality.
The game was never intended to have public servers but it was an oft requested feature, so we added them with one warning: as a small company with our priorities on finishing the game, we are unequipped to be in a prolonged arms race with hackers, and with a ton of mod support, Project Zomboid is always going to be susceptible to hacks on public servers and it's always recommended you try and find a whitelisted server for the optimal online experience.
However GOG Galaxy also supports multiplayer functionality that could provide additional security, and providing there are enough people out there wanting it, we'll look into adding Galaxy Integration in future if we possibly can as we're dedicated to making sure everyone who plays Zomboid has access to the same security against hackers.
Thanks for considering us and we're very proud to be here! We'll do our utmost to treat the service with the respect it deserves.
Love,
The Indie Stone
