This is just a post to explain the multiplayer architecture of the game, and what this means to GOG customers.

Our game does not rely on any third party services for any of its core multiplayer functionality, and will always be this way so the game can have full independence from any online system or store long into the future. We do however have optional Steam integration, and this was added so we could leverage the ability for mods of servers in multiplayer to ban people based on their username they purchased the game with, to provide a more hack free environment in open multiplayer, while still making sure we didn't deny our non Steam users any of the multiplayer functionality.

The game was never intended to have public servers but it was an oft requested feature, so we added them with one warning: as a small company with our priorities on finishing the game, we are unequipped to be in a prolonged arms race with hackers, and with a ton of mod support, Project Zomboid is always going to be susceptible to hacks on public servers and it's always recommended you try and find a whitelisted server for the optimal online experience.

However GOG Galaxy also supports multiplayer functionality that could provide additional security, and providing there are enough people out there wanting it, we'll look into adding Galaxy Integration in future if we possibly can as we're dedicated to making sure everyone who plays Zomboid has access to the same security against hackers.

Thanks for considering us and we're very proud to be here! We'll do our utmost to treat the service with the respect it deserves.

Love,

The Indie Stone

I, for one, would welcome Galaxy integration, but you guys probably need to focus on a whole lot of other stuff first, so I wouldn't say that feature should be all that high on your priorities list; still, I don't know what other GOGlodytes think about it, maybe a lot of people do wish to see Galaxy integration ASAP?

[EDIT] thank you so much for bringing your game over here; it's really cool when devs and publishers don't treat us GOGgers like second-rate customers. Much love, Indie Stone, keep up the awesomeness!

I think that you need to add more content to the game before dealing with that... NPC and vehicles would be fun, clothing (visible hats, gloves, ARMOUR, coats, some kind of visual personalization).... or at least add more items/mechanics like the mod Hydrocraft (http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/11557-hydrocraft-mod/)
Well, Hell YEAH I'd love some Integration over here!
You Guys are awesome. Keep it up!

Thank you so much for this post, as the current state of things makes it almost impossible to determine if a game will allow a user to host their own server or plan over a LAN.

Personally I wouldn't ever use Galaxy integration, but that is because I prefer to play with trusted friends instead of random people on the Internet. However, so long as LAN/Direct connect is retained, as it sounds that it would, I wouldn't be opposed to Galaxy integration.
Well, i would be more than happy to see that...GoG users are having a hard time compared to the steam community, for both multi and single player. It's almost impossible to keep up with the mapping/modding community, as most contents are downloaded via the steam workshop.
Keep up the great job!

How would Galaxy integration help with downloading maps from Steam Workshop?

i don't think it will, but it's a sign of the gog community getting attention, so i hope it will trigger a process of leveling up things between the different versions.
I would love to find other GOGers to play this with without having to use Galaxy.

I haven't multi-played in ages. I am kind of lost and have questions, please forgive seemingly silly questions, of which I may have a handful:

How does a persistent world work in multiplayer (specifically PZ's multiplayer) ? If I play with just a few friends, but we can't always play at the same time, how does that work? Can any 1 of us host if no one else is playing currently so that if others do come to play, they then join? Or does the same host always have to host the same game? I suppose I could just find a friend, fire up the game, and figure it out, but, I'd like to know some things before hand!

I for one would welcome full Galaxy integration for pretty much everything, including achievements but of course keeping separate options for those who prefer not to use Galaxy is nice too. I get limited time to play games today, and I find that games with Galaxy integration get more of my time than games that don't. So I would defiantly put more time into this game if it had integration. Still I like it either way though.
I was just barred from a server for having the GoG version of the game.
This explains it i guess.

I was about to refund the game on GoG because i bought this mainly for multiplayer and this pretty much cripples the game expirience for me for the most part.

But after reading this and frankly being tired of treated like a second rate customer by modders (Steam Workshop) i'll take one for the team and cross my fingers. Maybe wait for the NPC patch to come to enjoy the single player aspect of it.

If this is how you got served, this is close to idiotic. You should go public with this post and mention it on IndieStone forums, be vocal. GOG versions is official release, barring someone from server because he has GOG version is inappropriate and barbaric.

Finally, you can open up your own server - and be admin. Typically, the users rush in quickly, so be aware to limit the slots or harden the access, so you are not joined by a barb force.
One issue with Galaxy is that it's not available for Linux while the game itself is. Relying on it would lock out a part of the customer base, Linux users and those who don't want to use Galaxy.

As long as they keep direct ip and Galaxy separate Linux users won't have much of a problem other than finding a server that supports both GoG and Steam users.
I find this topic very interesting and informative.

However, where are we today?

1-Can I as a GOG user play (coop) with my friend on Steam? If yes, is there any limitation?
2-Can we as a GOG users use the convenience of the Steam workshop?
