The truth is I can't even explain it. Something about the Two Thrones just worked for me.
First, the prince sounds like in SoT again (I really liked that voice). I really liked it's length, the story the levels.
I agree, however, that fighting was probably better in WW but I don't play a Prince of Persia game because of the fights.
That said I really liked that there were very few fights in the 2008 PoP. Okay, the prince suddenly lost 90% of his acrobatic abilities but almost every fight had a meaning.
And thanks to Elika's teleport ability there wasn't as much backtracking as, say, in WW - which was what I hated in WW the most.
BUT to be clear here: I think that the PoP games are soem of the best games made in the last few years and I love the whole series (including WW) I just think, that WW is the worst one.

And I still don't get why people get that impression.
The plattforming was incredible in WW,despite the lack of the puzzles the developers took the critics at hearts and made a big update in the SoT-series, the Dahaka hunts were a good element, so was the time travel. Technically it's a remake of Shadow and the Flame, and it's somewhat ironic people don't love it despite the similarities with the old franchise.
Truth to be told, I liked T2T, especially the part with the tower of Babel and the very last level, but it still didn't make up the awesomness of WW... but I think it has to do with the fact that I am one of the few people who knew the existence of the original version of T2T which was scrapped by Ubisoft and I still grieve about it. Google for "Kindred Blades", there are still many screens and videos left from this...

Count me in as one those few people. I still have most of the media saved on my HDD... btw now that I think of it were you member "Tristan[numbersomething]" on the official PoP forums?
He scavenged some media hidden on Ubi's servers and other stuff.
I also enjoyed the two thrones despite it not being what was intended from beginning, it's a solid platformer. But the environments, the "open-world" aspect, the atmosphere, the time tricks make WW my favourite PoP of the series.

pops117: Yep,Tristan_129, that's me. It's my old Ubisoft account I am still using but will disregard it soon since I hate Ubisoft so much....SO MUCH!!!
I saved alot back then in E3'05 because I was totally hype for the game. Really really hype.
I joined the official fancommunity of the game called "Swordsmen" and skipped several days school to become winrar on the community in order to become on of the 20s whose names will be in the credits of the game. I even lied about my age back then (awesomeness.jpg).
If you watch the credits closely you'll see the name "Tristan Maertin". That's me.
Truth to be told, I was really left disappointed once I got my copy at the first day of the release(first time in my life I ever pre-ordered a game).

I see. I believe my memories might be somewhat off here. When WW was first released I felt it to be too dark and too hard. And, well, I really didn't like the open-world-aspect of WW back then.
Comparing it with "The Shadow and the Flame" sparked my interrest. Please, if you got the time, tell me what you mean exactly as I loved that game back when it was released (but apparently I became an even weaker player as it is just too damn hard for me nowadays).
And, as I said, I still think that WW is a great game. I just found T2T to feel more "arabiannightsy".
But WW should definately made available on GOG - with the incredible soundtrack.
avatar
Patryn: "arabiannightsy".

See, and this is the core problem we are facing here, mate, again and again until everyone will confront himself about their own world view.
I have been once reading a review of a really....screwed up girl who said that Warrior Within is an abomination because it doesn't follow the "orientalistic view of western gamers" which is pretty much romantic medival Arabia with some Indian and lesser Persian elements.
As twisted as she is, she got one point. Why the hell so many people disliked WW was because this game took the brave step to go away from the dreamy Arabia to a darker ancient Persia. People want to see Aladin, not Cyrus.
It is interesting that a prejiduce view really determinates your gameplay fun. Because:
Warrior Within is the closest game to a Persian theme of the whole POP-series.
You think old Persian mythology was nice and all fluffy added with candy but it was not. It is a dark battlefield between good and evil, where the blade is the only answer for glory and survival and evil haunts you everywhere. Pretty much LotR without the gay Elves and Goblins. If you read the Shahname by Firdausi you'd pretty much get how nasty the Persian mythology can be.
The developers must've taken alot inspiration from the Avesta (Zoroastrian bible) and the Zurvanian religion of Sassanid times when they worked on WW.
All the weapons you can collect in the game are possessing names directly from the Avesta (they even added some own made background story of each weapon, I can search it for you) which in context got some ironical undertone.
The Dahaka's name is coming from the Avesta aswel, but the guardian of the timeline got it's interpretation from the Zurvanian world view.
That everything within the timeline is pure chaos and arbitrariness und how futile it is to try to manipulte it.
I must say the Dahaka got also some old Greek elements about the determniating power of fate but it does play a lesser role since WW plays in an ancient era of Persia(unlike SoT).
Also, the Persian world suffers under a melancholic vanitas theme. If you travel to the past you see beatuful architecture and a mysterious yet aluring environment. But in the past everything is abonded, fallen apart, and forgotten. Just like the old glory Persia once carried before the arabs and turks destroyed everything in order to supress the population at their whim. Maybe to much reading into it, but the sand stays while everything vanishes.
Yes, the script was bad, yes Farrah was missing, and yes the metal thong was unneccessary(but hawt) and yes this game is glitchy as hell (that's why I want it on GoG, so it will be debugged) yet you have to reconsider the dynamic of the storyline with it's well placed twists. And don't forget the Prince. He is a tragic Firdausian hero, one even said he is a figure Shakespeare would've invented.
Nah, nevermind me, I am just a biased fan with a really off the head interpretation of WW.
Now about the similarity of SatF:
1.It plays on an abonded island which is pretty much dead(duuurrrrr)
2. Dark temples and dungeons
3.The inhabitans are wearing masks
4.The Prince himself dies and resurrects himself with the help of an irrational power
5. Both Princes were Outcasts(lol)
6. Both changed their fates
7. Some chick who wore some dress similar to Kaileena
Personally I think Ubisoft couldn't have come up with an original sequel so they just looked back at the Mechner classic added with the critics that the gameplay in SoT was to repetitive.
I think it turned out pretty well. The gameplay got alot better, the plattforming harder, and the combat alot more dynamic. But the choose of writers was poor. Ubisoft stated on their homepage that they hired high talented Hollywood writers for the WW-script.
If the script in WW is so bad you cannot wonder why Hollywood is full of fail. I'd have asked someone who was into dark stories like John August or even Michael Ancel (Beyond Good and Evil).
And that's why I want it on GoG. Not because of OMGSOFUCKINGEDGY AND CRAWWWWLING IN MY SKIIIIIIINNNNN111
One for the gameplay, second for the story, third for getting rid of the bugs and forth as a symbolic meaning for a successful expirement from Ubisoft's side worthy of a GoG.
That a franchise can change it's theme and still be a good game only by doing it right.
Personally I think WW would have got less hate if Ubisoft followed the original finale on T2T before scrapping everything and redesign it in less than 2 months to pretend that this is intended. SoT would've been gone, yes, but better than having future shit like The Forgotten Sands. Meh, fuck it.

Yeah, the way you word your posts gave it away ;) (can't explain it exactly but yeah...)
I remember that event... will check the credits again next time I install the game (I'm very cautious, I don't lose a second to apply the starforce removal patch :P)
Bah, Ubi has an ever changing attitude regarding their policies (I don't agree with many choices that company has made)and they're digging themselves into an ever deeper hole but going so far as to hate Ubi? They don't deserve that much attention.
I may go back to the forums some day (did it one year ago to post transparent game logos :P) there were (are?) some interesting folks back there. I regret registering only some time before the release of T2T... ok nostalgia kicks in these posts have picked my interest replay the old second PoP.

They are mostly gone now. The only one visiting the board are either delusial Ubisoft asslickers, stuck up casual pricks who think they are intellectuals for disliking WW, and some SoT-fanantics. The only interesting ones left were old SoT-Trilogy lovers(mind that I said "trilogy" they love WW as much as SoT as much as T2T) banding a group together calling themself "Deathbringers".
Deathbringers because they hate everything after T2T and request that the franchise should be killed off for good rather than releasing shallow sequels.
Anyway, currently the board is being flooded by extreme annoying casuals and 12 yr old noobs who don't even know how to google.
Those annoying casuals were ripping the death bringers by crafting the "Lightbringers" because they love EVERYTHING from the PoP-series(except WW) despite never playing the old ones and demand more and more sequels by spamming threads, randomely asking people to join them and having internal fights(opposite to the DB).
You can see the Ubiboard suffers alot of fail, noobery, and uncommunicative CEOs regarding the DRM, I wouldn't recommend you to go there unless you find a death bringer and ask to join their group. You'd be directed to a PM-board and can meet those "interesting folks".
Yes, I have been to long there, I should really leave the board. I was even trying to get some of those DB here to GoG, but the interest wasn't that high. It could change if WW and T2T are on GoG.
BTW, I have T2T with Starforces and I hate this DRM. I want T2T on GoG aswell :(

Yep, those are the ravages of time (pun intended), a new generation rolls on...
No but the Assassin's Creed forums were pretty bad (well just as that DRM was announced at least), never ending fights between pro-Ubi folks and the people graced with common sense(few they are). Oh great now I start patronizing too!
I'm glad I can find shelter on these boards :) it's comfy and nice here.

Yep, I also got T2T on release. Starforce has some pretty bad compatibility issues with modern OSes...
If it ever appeared on here I'm certain Ubi would just take a crack from some site and give that to GOG. It's delusional to think they would get out of their way to fix a 6 years old game too!

I love GOG for keeping games DRM free.
Sounds like a nice place that Ubisoft forum. ;-)
How is "Forgotten Sands"? I didn't get a chance to play it yet. But the things I saw and read about it look actually rather good.
Personally, I really liked the 2008 Prince of Persia (albeit not as much as the SoT-trilogy). I really do not see why it gets so much hate. I played through it again some weeks ago and really enjoyed it.
I began my SoT-trilogy-marathon a few weeks ago (I'm still in SoT) and really look forward to WW. Again, I really like WW I just thought it was the weakest part but maybe this time this will change...
Hey, I tollerate your opinion, but I just want to know why you think so 8/

Patryn: How is "Forgotten Sands"? I didn't get a chance to play it yet. But the things I saw and read about it look actually rather good.

It's horrible. Don't even think about renting it, for any console. The game is so dumbed down, it hurts. And the story is so stupid and it ruined the mystery of the SoT-series overall.
Mind to tell you that this game doesn't even have any connection to the SoT series at all.
Hey, I'm also from the Deathbringers aswell as from the Ubi forums, and well I couldn't resist coming to here. All 'Tantrix' words are true.
The worth The Forgotten Sands versions are the Wii and the PSP version. I really enjoyed the PSP version. Don't me blinded of it's 2.5D, because the only 2.5D is that you move left and right, but you also climb down and up, enter doors, portals etc... So for me it always feels like it's 3D
