The problem is this, when I try to read one of the videos in the animations bonus of the game, well, it doesn't. The media player returns an error.
I have Shark Win7 codecs installed ( http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html ). Do I need another?

I use GOM player which identified the videos needed the Indeo 5 codec. Try giving that a go.
Failing that use http://media-convert.com/ to upload the videos, and download them in a format you know windows 7 can read, such as WMV. Its totally free and requires no downloading.
I converted all of them in a few minutes as the file sizes are tiny; all the videos now work fine under windows 7

I was having the exact same problem (Win7 64 + Shark's Win7 Codecs) and that fixed it for me.

The setup you've linked stays on "looking for netscape instances".
I had to kill it.

In my case it stayed there for a while (the netscape instances thing) but it moved on after a bit.

Just installed it: doesn't work. MP still can't read it. When I click on help on the box it leads to a message saying that there may be a problem with the sound card.
But it's an old codec, should I reboot?
Just rebooted, still doesn't work.
Could the GoG staff reencode the files in a more friendly codec?

I didn't need to reboot. After installing the Indeo codecs, WMP started opening the avi videos right away.
Previously to Shark's Win7 codecs and Indeo codecs i had already installed FFDShow.
Codecs wise, FFDShow it's the only thing different i'm seeing between our two systems but i can't say if that would fix anything for you.

It seems you have some troubleshooting to do then...
In the meantime, if you want the POP videos animations in another format, i converted them from .avi to .wmp and uploaded them to my media fire account.
Here's the link.
The file is the 'POP animations.zip'.
Edit: SInce the problem was solved i removed the link.

For codec problems, I just use the Mega Codec Pack. It literally has every codec in it

Firstly thanks to Namur for taking the time to re-encode them.
Well, I've tried something again. I tried extracting the files from the zip then try to read them from a non-compressed folder... and it works.
I've just re-tried that after uninstalling the indeo codec pack, and it still works (maybe I should reboot to be sure).
So for those having the problem of a popup error coming up when trying to read it under WMP (by double-clicking it within the ZIP archive), try extracting the files first.
