Foolishly assumed patch was GOG approved and safe.
Messed up my install with the patch to the point of being unrecoverable.

System is fine, but Prey died.
Midway through my first playthrough.
Corrupted multiple files and messed with the game's exe location.

Love GOG but things like this are getting more and more frequent.
Not going to buy from a site that can't be trusted. Galaxy is getting
to be worse than the offline downloads for messing things up too.

Was going to get BG3 here. Now i'm reconsidering.
This has me legit worried about Phantom Liberty in a month.

Tyberias1980: HI! =)))

I'm still waiting too. Kaspersky deleted the file immediately! =)))

I haven't found any other information about the patch. :/
yop, i was using a sandbox without av-scanner.
i'm pretty sure it's a false positive. but pretty sure isn't absolutely sure. too many unusual things with this update, a strange folder name, no patch files, only the complete installation, no changelog (sadly not really unusual) and so on.
maybe everyone at gog was on holiday so noone was there to repair mistakes =)

edit: i just saw there are patch files now too, but still the same full-installer version.

Just don't use Galaxy, no reason to use it. Prey is not a new game, there is no reason to update it at all.

Of course I don't really understand this update, but my installation is still the same, I just didn't use galaxy.

PS. Of course the update is not a virus, it's just a false positive. When you download a file from an official source like gog it's 99.999% always a false positive.
The problem here is just that they updated the game without any changelog to know wtf they did update.

The Vulcaneer: Does anyone have info on the 14 GB update that just got downloaded for Prey?
avatar
Tyberias1980: Hi!

No, but my virus scanner sounded the alarm! The file Restarter.exe was a threat and very dangerous. I don't know what to make of that.

Hehe xD I know! =) Nice!

My Browser got also killed by that Update xD

So a successful day xD
There is a restarter.exe file in the binaries folder of the Epic Games installation of Prey too, so I doubt it's anything to worry about. Probably just a false positive as some have said. Would be great to know what's in the update anyway though, as it seems to only have been updated on GOG.
The Steam version hasn't been updated since they removed Denuvo from it 3 years ago. The Epic version says 1.8, but I have nothing to compare it to since GOG uses a completely different version numbering.
I'd just hold off on updating the GOG version for now. If it was anything critical it would've been updated everywhere.

The only other digital distributor that gives you the freedom with your games as GOG does, is itch, and they primarily carry indie games. You didn't have to update, even using Galaxy client. With Steam, they force you to update your games. Steam won't even let you delay an update, if an update is pending, it will not let you launch the game until you apply the update. I don't know about Epic, I don't use them and don't plan to.

With Galaxy you can roll back the game to the previous version. If you're using the offline installers, just re-install the previous version and don't update again.

And last, if there are offline installers for this update, it was approved by GOG. GOG makes the offline installers themselves, but I believe developers/publishers can self publish updates to Galaxy builds.

i am sad that you said that...
i modded prey like, 1 year ago...
i modded alot, always changing the games rules to see what sticks...

i finished with some changes done to mooncrash that i liked, but the main game still used the previous ruleset that i have chosen

i found out by accident of the new update...

someday i plan to mod prey again, i suppose my mods are now incompatible with the game, i haven't tried to test.
Yes, I have the same thing, the antivirus is sounding the alarm and the game has stopped running. Can anyone contact the moderators? Maybe write to tech support?
