I like what I read in the description. What is the game play like and is there any games that can be compared to this one?

This game is like Tropico, if you played, or something simillar to SimCity, but less complicated :)
Hello. This game is a kind of strategy/commerce/adventure/naval combat game set in the carribean spanish main. You are free to be a trader, pirate, etc... Very nice if you like strategy ones. Read the reviews on the internet to know more.
Bye.

Wow...if this is a Tropico style game, I must own it. Tropico is a GREAT game.
Speaking of Tropico, they should add that game to GoG.com

Indeed. Though I was never much of a fan of the standard Tropico, Sandbox Mode was awesome fun.
You basically control a fleet of ships, sending them to various ports buying and selling goods. As you get money, you can also build different kind of buildings to produce goods and stuff yourself (maybe this is where the Tropico-comparisons come from, though I can't say I see any great similarities between PR2 and Tropico).
There's a lot of options in the game, so it's more advanced than I just made it sound. It's quite deep but fairly easy to get the hang of. I enjoyed it a lot back when I played it.
The game has a pretty thorough tutorial, which is good because it can be rather complicated. It requires a good bit of micromanagement, but if you like being the one in control, you might really enjoy that. I did. Since my old copy won't run on Vista, I'll probably get this.
Starting with one ship, you sail from port to port, buying low and selling high; you can only see and do things in a port where one of your ships is docked or where you have built structures such as a warehouse. As you grow in wealth, you move up in levels. At a certain level, you can turn over the execution of individual trades to the AI, allowing you to concentrate on running your sizable empire. I never did much with piracy, but that is an option as well.
Combat and missions were alright; the economy is where this game really shines.

I think this is an overly simplistic comparison... and not very accurate.
The main focus of Port Royale is the trading between the cities of the caribbean, while the city-building part is an afterthough.
In contrast, the main focus of Tropico is to develop your island. If I recall correctly, there was no advanced trading option between neighbouring nations.
It also doesn't exactly match settings. Tropico is set in the caribbean, true, but in the middle of the 20th Century, while Port Royale 2 is more like 17th Century.
Finally, and most important: One of the high-points of Tropico was the witty humor that permeated the game, and we all have to admit that Tropico would not be half as successfull if it was void of it. In contrast, the characters in Port Royale 2 are as flat and uncharacteristic as they can be, and the game is, if not serious, at least absolutely neutral on that point.

Having that said, and in response to the OP question, Port Royale is a trade simulator, the kind of you can spend an hour or a hundred, depending of your tastes. The game can be a bit unintuitive sometimes, but does a good job of guiding you through the ropes, and the curve of difficulty scales fairly well. Most people think the lower point are the fighting mini-games, which aren't as fleshed out as they should be and they can be viewed as a "Sid Meyer's Pirates" afterthough/blatant copy/hommage.

Excellent game play. Similar to Patrician, or to 1701 A.D. It plays out in real time, but is pausable, and time passage can also be accelerated. besides trading, you can run missions, construct your own industries, find and fight pirates. The graphics are good, music is good, the game depth is excellent. You can pick up the basics quickly, but the first time I played, I went for weeks without even getting to some of the more interesting things you can do, like build convoys.
The closest older game I can think this is like is The Merchant Prince and Machiavelli done by Microprose back in the mid '90's. I have both Port Royale and Patrician II and III but not Port Royale II. Are the improvements of II over the first version worth buying it again for?
