I need to be able to change the resolution somehow, otherwise I have to play the game with scrolling, and I don't think it's worth it.
Is there any way to force it into a lower resolution?

The game appears to be locked at 1024x768 resolution. You can run it in windows mode assuming the gog version installs the config tool, it should show up in the start menu. You can then unselect fullscreen, this will only help if your desktop resolution is more then 1024x768.

From what you describe though your desktop resolution is actually under 1024x768, at least it sounds that way. Could you not increase your screens resolution to at least 1024x768 to see the game in fullscreen?

my eee pc's tiny native resolution is 1024x600
but you are correct, the game is locked at 1024x768. sad day.

Do you mean you actually have a scroll bar at the edge of the screen?
Anyway, when you are viewing a town, you can zoom out with the mousewheel (or however your computer does it). It does make things smaller of course, but you can see more as well.

no, its how my computer (im guessing its a function of winxp) deals with programs that are set at higher resolutions than it can display: moving the mouse to the edge of the screen scrolls around the program as if it was zoomed in past 100%

Oh, that's the way the game works, I'm afraid. I don't know of any way to cause it to always display the whole town area, and I think things would be very tiny if you could zoom out that far.

NO, i realize that there is scrolling in the game, but I also have to scroll the entire screen around (like, i can't see the whole hud unless i scroll down/up). i have to scroll to see all the buttons on the main menu. its how all programs that are too big do it.

Okay, I didn't realize you meant the interface when you said "the game" or "the program." My mistake.

By reading your message, I assume you are playing with a netbook. Am I right?
Anyway, it is what I am doing, and I simply cannot play PR on my Acer Aspire One 9 in, and I find it quite frustrating. I am able to view the introductory cinematics, and the start menu, but as soon as I click on the tutorial, the game tries to load the first scenario (?), and then the game quits, and I get what seems to be an error message in German. There are four buttons in the lower part of the windows, but I don't speak German, so I have no idea what it means.
I figured that I would need some way of changing the screen resolution, but I can't find any (my AAO runs Win7 RC). So have I bought this game for nothing, or is there a solution I have not seen?

Ok to answer my own question, the only way I could play the game is going back to Win XP, and using a1ctl, which lets me go in compressed 1024x768 mode. This way, it works great.

sadly, the graphics doesnt seem to be increaseable, sticking with 1024x768 on a 24'' monitor (and 16:9) simply currupts the whole feeling..
@ gog: is there a workaround to increase (or decrease) the resolution of the game?

I'm having the same issue, on an EeePC (running Windows 7). The game crashes any time I start a new game, most likely because of the resolution.

I know it's not an ideal solution, nor even possible for many people, but if you are using a netbook, there's always the option of connecting a 'proper' monitor to the VGA port (or a modern flat-screen TV with VGA-in which are a lot more common these days compared to back when the OP started the thread).

You can then use the 1024x768 screen mode that the game needs on a netbook.
