I have been googling to find out which version of Populous II is superior, but haven't been able to find any answers yet. Does anyone know which version is the better one?
The Amiga version of most of these games was better. The Amiga had much better sound and music as well as graphics. The PC was just catching up. A similar game to this that used the same isometric engine was Power Monger (would love to see that on GOG by the way!) and the Amiga version of this game had a great intro with music etc and the PC version did not.

They seem very similar in many respects, but personally, I always preferred my Amiga and would still be using it instead of a PC had Commodore not went under. ;)

Well, the audio was slightly better in the Amiga version (most notably it had the heartbeat which kinda told you how good your situation is - but could also be annoying for some players) but generally I consider the PC version superior. It's a bit prettier and most importantly it has the fullscreen feature which shows you a much bigger part of the map.

When populous 3 came out. PCs were just starting to get decent for games. I had just switched to PC for other reasons. Before that I always got the Amiga versions. Powermonger had a way better animated intro that the PC version.

I would love to just hi-jack the thread and talk about Amiga's. Somewhere in the 2000 Windows and Mac OS finally caught up to Amiga Dos 2.0. Must........stay....away...from ....ebay. I don't need an A1200 again. :)
Sorry to necropost but had to answer this as I have played Populous 2 on the Amiga and the PC.

Sound may have to go to the Amiga, but I didn't notice it to be a huge difference, but graphically the PC absolutely ripped the Amiga version a new one. It had an SVGA mode and could be played in full screen...I don't remember the Amiga having these options (but I could be wrong).....

So the PC version overall I considered to be FAR superior.

Tony.
Wasn't this a title where the Mac got some special love?

In my eyes the PC became the superior platform in like 1993, in 1994 at the very latest. I mean c'mon: with the 486 processor the PC was capable of stuff the Amiga couldn't even dream about, using hard drives was the standard and not some hightech luxury as it was on the Amiga, the Soundblaster killed the Amiga's audio superiority and then there was those CD-ROM games with lots of beautiful cutscenes and high quality music. When I saw games like Doom and Magic Carpet it was clear to me that I won't ever buy another Amiga game.
I should have been more clear. I was referring to the Amiga OS with my comments about 2000, not the hardware or graphics. I switched to PC in early 90s myself.
So what's the consensus on this one? I'm a sucker for definitive versions so I probably won't buy if Amiga's better.

For that matter, how do the DOS and Amiga versions of Populous 1 compare?
Well both populous 1 and 2 were games without a good sense of an internal timer, so faster computer == faster game.

As a result, playing on an accelerated amiga was annoying, and I've not yet been able to tune dosbox to run at a reasonable speed.
Have to say Amiga version was best although i had an atari st so i would say that is 2nd dos is third.
This explains why I felt a little disappointed when I downloaded and played the GOG PC version on my PC. It just didn`t sound as cool as I remembered... At first I thought it was tinted-spectacle memories.

But now I realise I had the AMIGA version all those years ago!

I've just joined GOG so that I could play this again. The graphics may be better but the PC sound is beyond awful, the atmosphere is all but gone as a result. It's a real shame, sound can make or break a game. Get the Amiga version if you can!

I agree about the sound, or lack of really. I played this to death on the Amiga and was so pleased when I saw this on GOG that I bought it straight away. Oh, the disappointment upon playing to find that the sound experience was not the same. All the joy was sucked out of playing and I haven't fired it up since. I wish I'd still got my miggy version...
Just to answer the previous comment about the Amiga version and full screen. You can enter full screen by pressing the enter key on your number pad (not the enter key on your keyboard)
