(Forgot to mention in the title, this is for Populous: The beginning. My bad.)

There doesn't seem to be any other topics about this, so here goes. The store page for the game indicates that it does not support newer AMD cards, more precisely the 7xxx and 8xxx series, and also requires version 13.4 or older of the GPU drivers. I have an AMD HD 7770 as well as the latest drivers. Why does the game not support my GPU and the latest drivers for it as well? I've managed to get older games like Fallout 1 and Diablo 1 to work with a few adjustments, but why would Populous 3 not work (at least according to the store page)? I love this game very much and really want to play it again.

This question / problem has been solved by Shukakuimage
Because the atiumdag.dll found on the internet and provided in the game installation do not have references for these graphics cards and there's no dll out there yet that includes them for this game. Plus, this game is VERY old (circa 1998, which is older than Homeworld (released in 1999)) so I doubt that it would ever work on such new hardware.

I just thought I would reply to this thread and provide this link to a working and free version of PopTB that I found after buying the GOG version and having the exact same problem as OP. Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by doing this, but if some fans of the game can do it for free then it's pretty bad form that GOG ask for money for a version that's not gauranteed to work.

I need to ask: does that install the WHOLE populous game or does it require a purchased copy to work? if it's the latter, you will have to remove your link as GOG would not like to see people getting the game for no cost.

The files you download on that site are 19 megs the install files for pop is 311 megs.

I have not tried it since I got poptb to work on my win 8.1 desktop but I highly doubt they compressed the entire game into 19 megs.
Just like all that own a new ATI card, it seems, I also cannot run the D3D version of the game. However, the software version of the game did start but with "the rainbow effect" graphics glitch.

I thought that updating the drivers solved the problem but it did not. Apparently, money spent on this game for ATI cards owners are money wasted.

I am *definitely not* rolling back my drivers to ancient versions to try and see if it solves the problem.

As a fan of the game I don't really care what GOG think or want. They supplied a copy of the game that does not work on modern systems, I found one that does and shared it. I paid good money to be able to play it again but they did not hold up their end of the bargain, so here we are.

You can fix the corrupted palette issues by using the program "DXWnd". Instructions for installing/configuring dxwnd

THIS SAYS THAT IT DOES!
WHY DOESN'T IT WORK!
IT WON'T LAUNCH WITH MY 7770

There is absolutely no need to use all caps lock or use expletives. You are misreading the article, which only refers to recent cards when the game was made available on GOG.com

This game does not work whatsoever on any AMD HD 7xxx and 8xxx cards (it will work on the non-HD versions of those cards). This is clearly stated on the game card on the GOG.com website.

Have any AMD owners tried dgVoodoo2?
Come on GoG, this is NOT solved! Game works fine on my lower-specced rig, that has an Nvidia card, but not my main machine, because it uses a newer AMD card - it's such a classic game, no way I want to play it in software mode with fricken rainbow artifacts and glitches, when it looks and runs so much better if it can run in D3D...This really needs to be sorted...

Again, have you tried dgVoodoo2? With or without atiumdag.dll in the game's folder?

Hi ZellSF, cheers for the reply. yes, I have had a play with the dgVoodoo2 files, tried with and without atiumdag.dll, (and also tried some from other sites etc), still no luck, but I'll keep having a play and see if I can sort it. I'll delete the entire folder and reinstall from scratch first as well, thanks for the suggestion. :)

Still, if I can get it to work via the dgVoodoo2 workaround, surely this could be added or update by GoG directly for the game, rather than users having to mess round and sort it through trial and error?
