Hi !
I just bought populous the beginning, but it does not work on windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center...ugh....

Any idea ? Or is there any possibility for my credit card to be refund ?
Well when you say it doesn't work, do you mean it won't launch or it crashes in game or what?
If you haven't already, try using various compatibility settings or playing the game in software mode to see if those help.

If you check the spec sheet of the game it says it only supports Windows XP and 7, no Windows 8 or 8.1 support (yet?)
Try running it from popTB.exe rather than the GoG launcher, that worked for me - I also ran the initial installer as Administrator, not sure if that made a difference but I do have the game running on Win 8.1.
Yup, as previously mentioned try running popTB.exe, it works for me with windows 8.1

your tip perfectly worked for me !! thank you guy !
Just got the game too, got Windows 8.1 Pro (64-Bit) Update 1 and the game won't work for me either, tried popTB & D3DpopTB in all comptability and administrator modes, get a couple of errors, the one that comes up the most is "Application Error (0xc0000022)", wich i know as to do with restrictions on DLL. so i added Read Only on every single one of them, also gave the games file full permission for my user name, but still is the same.

Even though i know i should have checked the game card for comptability, i know theres allways a way to make something work, and you managed before, was hoping maybe you could point me out to a solution, thanks in advance.

Giving me the same thing with Dungeon Keeper 2 :(

I am also getting the popTB won't start either. I see what the problem is, I think. They are using an older version of Qt and did some bad programming to say "I don't know what version of Windows this is so I'm going to quit.". I've used older versions of Qt that will say that message in Win 8.1, but the application doesn't suddenly quit.

The gamecard does not mention support for Windows 8 unfortunately. Contact Support and if there is no solution, you can ask for a refund.
Populous the Beginning working on Windows 10.

I would expect this means it is possible on Win 8 too.

First right click on the popTB.exe file and select Properties. From here I selected the following....

* Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
* Reduce color mode to 16-bit.
* Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.
* Run as administrator.

Apply these settings and click on the popTB.exe to launch the game. It still wasn't working if I used the Start menu link.
Run as administrator may not be needed but I had it checked already when I was attempting to get this running.

Error message 0xc0000022:

SOLUTION: Go to Control Panel => Programs => Programs and Features => Turn Windows features on or off and select "DPLAY" (Legacy).

(More information on the reasons here: https://www.gog.com/forum/anno_series/windows_10_window_mode)

If you use dgVoodoo (dege's Tools) you can play Populous with D3D mode. Launching the executables with the -allres options enables native screen resolutions.

Tested on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. I have completed a few levels without any problems.

Thank you :) I was having trouble running it on WIndows 10 - First I was getting Error message 0xc0000022 (fixed it with permissions on dxplay.dll) but then I've got ordinal 4 missing in weanetr.dll. Enabling Dplay feature did the trick :)

EDIT: Did not like dgVoodoo performance (it allowed to run 3d though which crashed otherwise) and mouse cursor was going freely on my 2nd monitor. I guess I'll play it on my laptop under Linux + Wine - it works great there.

with dgVoodoo you need to disable vsync and you must use a low polling rate on your mouse.

Alternatively, if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of mouse responsiveness, run the game with /frameratemouse

Performance should be perfect in either case.

VSync was disabled (this is by default if I remember). At resolutions above 800x600 mouse acceleration is needed and there were small freezes. I've remember seeing /frameratemouse but didn't know what it is doing. Biggest problem for me was mouse was lagging (more on higher resolutions) which under Linux+wine on Intel video @1366x768 is not the case and cursor was not grabbed by the game (I have two monitors and clicking on second minimized the game) which after trying software mode is probably due to the dgVoodoo.

I don't think sacrificing mouse responsiveness is a good idea - it can be become very frustrating experience :)
