I've spent alot of time playing this game when I was younger and have pretty much mastered it. I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on enhancing your experience with this game.

Car settings:

You have 300 points to put across five different attributes of your car.

The attributes are:

Acceleration - Determines how quickly your car reaches its max speed. You'll want to max it. Having high acceleration means you'll reach your top speed quickly and will help you recover from crashes faster.

Braking - Determines how quickly your car stops when hitting the brakes. This stat is worthless. Set it to zero, and don't put any points in here. The tracks in POD are set up so you'll be able to go through them at full speed, and letting go of the accelerator is usually enough to slow your car down enough for the rare sharp turn that you can't go through at full throttle. You will almost never have to use the brakes in this game, so why puts points there?

Grip - Determines how well your car sticks to the track while turning. Low values will cause it to slide going around corners. Going with extremes, a Grip setting of 0 will make the car drive like it has soap for wheels and is driving on an ice rink, while setting it to 100 will make it drive like it's on rails and will never slide. Keep this stat high, maybe not at 100, but enough to make it not slide around too much.

Handling - Determines how tight your car's turning radius is. Due to the way the physics engine works, cars in POD are very twitchy. Setting this too high will cause your car to oversteer and make it easy to crash. 20 is usually good enough for most tracks. Bump it to 40 for technical tracks if you need it, and 10 for high tracks with gentle turns.

Speed - Determines your car's max speed. Setting it to 100 will allow your car to hit 200mph. Keep this maxed or close to it as possible.

I tend to use these settings most of the time and they work well for most of the tracks:

Acceleration: 100
Braking: 0
Grip: 80
Handling: 20
Speed: 100

Also, each car has different driving characteristics that are independent of the stats. Gamma, for example, has a tendency to skip while cornering, which tends to make it understeer more than the other cars. Bakar tends to turn-in while cornering, and tends to oversteer because of it. Scorp has a more truck-like suspension and has more of a weighty feel to it. Take each car out for a spin, using the same settings, and find out which one you like best. I tend to use Bakar and Dopple alot due to their low profile and their tendency to oversteer.

Before playing the championship, learn each of the tracks using the time attack mode.

And of course, have fun with the game!

Great tips, specially about grip and handling. Tks!!
But i believe brake is extremely important in back to hell expansion. There are lots of shap and narrow turn compared to the original 16 tracks.

The extra tracks do have more sharp turns, but I would still not have too many points in braking. Having more handling and a grip in the range 50-70 allows me to slide around those turns rather easily.

It really does depend on the track layout however. Most tracks you can get away with the setup I mentioned before, but a few tracks will require some tweaking, like the track Parking. You'll definitely want high Handling and some points in Braking there.

Do you have any tip on Babelweb? That track is slippery. So hard to get decent result there.

Try to stay off slippery sections if you can and don't make sudden movements. On those slippery parts, try to gently drift around those corners. Honestly, I really can't provide any good advice besides that since it's been a long time since I've played the game and that is a track I've always had trouble with.
