nicode: Thanks. In the meantime, could you be so kind to send me a zipped crash dump file (see post 20) to nico@nicode.net. So I might have an idea while looking at the call stack before I setup a Windows machine for testing purposes....
sure. where are the .dmp files located? not sure if it has created these files.

i added MiniDmpType=0 to [PodHacks] section of the PodHacks.ini.

In the game folder.

I reproduced the problem on a Windows 7 machine (not VMware) by repeatedly pressing or holding Ctrl+Z (German version :-)).
It doesn't crash directly, but shows an error message box (memory failure) first.
Let's see if the weekend offers some spare time to debug and fix the issue...

it still does not create any .dmp files for me though, maybe i don't have something installed.

what happens is i start a normal race and ctrl + Y to restart race will most definitely hang the game, the countdown is like 'five four five four..' repeatedly, then there is a small popup window about a memory error, then the game closes.

guess it's just one of POD's quirks on modern machines, as i've seen others saying the GOG version also crash when restart race. i can restart indefintely without crashing if not using PodHacks on the exe, so the CD version still playable for me.

nicode: No, it's not another iPod hack ;)

The intended use is to allow alternate Glide wrappers with the GOG release.

Binaries: http://svn.nicode.net/podhacks/bin/
Sources: svn://nicode.net/podhacks (browse)

To update an existing PodHacks.dll run the new PodHacks.exe once.
Run it as administrator if the access is denied (install/update/settings).

AntiVir tends to classify the PodHacks.exe as TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen2.
This is a false positive. All binaries have been checked on VirusTotal.
If your proxy/firewall/antivirus automatically resets the connection:
download PodHacks.zip, password: "PodHacks" (without quotes)

Since version 2.0 it is possible to control the volume of the redirected music
(Track02.mp3) and the sound effects separately on Windows Vista or newer.

For separate volume controls on Windows XP or earlier you need:
- a CD named "POD" with a second audio track
- or a second (virtual or physical) sound device
(Track02.mp3 must be decoded to Track02.wav)
- or a tool that provides separate mixers for applications

Best regards,
Nico

The site for the PodHacks is down. Is there an alternate site to download these PodHacks?

djp42: The site for the PodHacks is down. Is there an alternate site to download these PodHacks?
You can download the latest version from a snapshot of the site here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20191021165406/http://pod.nicode.net/gold/gog/
I have yet to try this PodHacks stuff, maybe it would be easier than the method I came up with. I remember the site not having any links anymore when I visited it, so I had to come up with alternate method.

After much work I finally got POD working smoothly in windowed mode, music playback and the original car engine sounds. Using an app called DxWnd. (DirectX/DDraw wrapper) This one works perfectly on Linux using Wine.

I uploaded a ZIP with all these fixes combined in a single download link, it's here (game files not included, no pirated game assets here) Simply copy and replace files inside your game directory.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hikcbqe4lmqkng3/POD_Gold__Music_Fix.zip?dl=0

Alternate link for direct download (better in some browsers)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hikcbqe4lmqkng3/POD_Gold__Music_Fix.zip?dl=1

Changes:
- this is merely the GOG version with some additional files with it, the EXE itself is not modified
- LECMUSIC.DLL and Winmm.dll + OGG file for music playback
- included FIX.MEG for old car engine sounds (optional)
- ripped off movie files for less disk space usage (optional)
- Sound/Music volume buttons do not work for this version for some reason. Or only sound effects change volume, can't remember, I can't test it at the moment. Music volume remains constant.
- If you want to play the game without music in the background, simply rename Track02.OGG to something like xTrack02.OGG or anything else you prefer.
- From what I remember, this version works with nGlide, but I remember not noticing any visual differences by running it like that. So I pretty much stuck with the stock GOG version. (nGlide also works on Linux/Wine by the way)

edit:
Even the youtube video was removed? Strange...
Do anyone have copies of these files?
I can upload them and keep on my personal server there, my links will never be removed.

Dropping here because my Pod Gold install on Win10 stopped working. Using dgVoodoo and some NicoDe intel collected here 7 years ago...

Thanks for backing up the files.
Could someone summarize the best way to install Pod on Win10 atm ?
Thanks ! ;)

My Dropbox link is still alive (I'm keeping these links permanent for as long as I can... Links will only be removed if something happens out of my control...)

The procedure is focused on Linux but should work on Windows too.
On Windows, all you should need is DxWnd (in case the game doesn't already work by using Compatibility With Windows XP)
DxWnd is a wrapper for older versions of DirectX, translating them to DirectX9 in newer cards. That is super useful for Win98 games, games from that period between 97-2001

DxWnd also has built-in CPU limiter, in case you get garbled engine sounds.

Keep me updated... What is preventing you from running the game on Windows? Is there any error message?
Take my files there from the ZIP and paste over the ones in your installation directory. (do the installer even runs in modern systems? I used the GOG installer, I don't have the original CD's anymore)

Sorry for the delay.

I could make Pod works just fine with a fresh install and DxWnD but it's really ugly. I'd like to use PodHack and nGlide but PodHacks just freezes when I hit the exe.

Looking for a way to get nicer textures... :)
