Hi all, i like to know how to setup GoG version of PoD with dgvoodoo on Windows 7 x64. I tried using dgvoodoo 1.50 beta 2 but i must change my desktop color to 16-bit, still there is another problem. RIght after the intro cutscene, PoD will ask for CD. Is there any workaround for this? I look on Youtube video, they can change the resolution with dgvoodoo.

Now i can run this game with nGlider, but i'm not sure i can share the trick or not since you must download the .iso and mount it.

The GOG version already has a Glide wrapper applied to it (see the version of glide2x.dll it installed). As far as I can tell and in my experience, you cannot use another Glide wrapper such as dgVoodoo on top of the GOG Glide2x wrapper. That just doesn't work.

You can use dgVoodoo or nGlider just fine with the original retail version of the game, which uses totally different EXEs and DLLs. That's why your ISO is working. But trying to use it with the GOG version will throw up a whole bunch of errors, because dgVoodoo requires its own Glide wrapper which is not compatible with the one from GOG.

I wonder if GoG version using Glide or Direct3D? Because i can see several artifact like black square behind certain object, most noticeable on Beach. For example, the pillar in Beach (or tree something like that) and devil & flying bat in Hellway track. But from Youtube video of retail version which emulate 3Dfx, there are no problem.

Apart from that i think GoG version is the most compatiblet for modern PC. I have read countless of issue from retail owner such as sound stuttering, no fmv, missing background music, crashes, graphical glitch and so on. Even with dgvoodoo it still produce several display glitch.

But from another information that i gathered, nGlide works better than dgvoodoo and the development still alive. The latest one released on August this year compared to dgvoodoo which was several years ago. But the problem with nGlide is it isn't compatible with Indeo, you must delete certain .dll file from windows. So, it is better to stick with GoG version without any modification for people who doesn't understand much about modding like me, apart from adding some tracks and cars. Because it will not strip down any of the content, and lot less buggier.

The GOG version uses its own Glide2x wrapper from what I can tell, just skim through the installation directory and you'll see the files for it. And yes, it has some bugs, a huge one is the MAP cheat not working, and the electricity animation in the Skyrace track being mostly black. This is different than the retail version, which had its own 3DFX modes and could be used with other wrappers.
I was able to run the game with dgvoodoo.

In fact I cannot run the game normally.

You do NOT need the original CD, but you need a CD labelled POD2_0, and it must have a data\binary\video\intro.cd file.

Essentially, I installed the game
made a copy of intropod.avi as introcd.avi in the same folder
used folder2iso on the pod install dir, labeling it as POD2_0
mount using alcohol 52%

Now you can use any wrapper you want. Tools used are free.
PodHacks has been moved to a separate thread:
Community / POD / Planet of Death - Hooks (PodHacks)

nicode: I hacked a hook library and an "installer" application together: svn.nicode.net/podhacks

Download the PodHacks.exe and save it in the directory where you installed POD.
Run it and enable the hook for the PODX3Dfx.exe.
Now you can rename the glide2x.dll to use another Glide wrapper.

Best regards,
Nico
This is great, thanks Nico! Always nice to have your services with POD again :D

You're welcome :)

For some reason I forgot to support the CD-ROM check while selecting the Ghost Mode... Fixed in Version 1.1 now.

Can i use the program for other games? For example Speed Busters, because if i used another wrapper, the game will ask for CD.

That depends on the application. PodHacks is very specific to POD.

To say something meaningful about other applications, I should have access to it (or at least the binary)... something that should be discussed elsewhere. Just send me an email with the details and wait until I have some spare time :)

ps: Well, I guess you're refering to Speed Busters: American Highways

Yeah that one.

wormholewizards: Yeah that one.
No, this does not work with PodHacks (even if you set ValidateExe=Off). But the source code might be used as template for a SPB hook/hack.

If that so, i guess i should let it go. It just a graphic, GOG version only allow the game to run with D3D5 while 1999 patch allow the game to run with 3Dfx and D3D6. But still, D3D5 is not bad since it allow user to set the resolution up to 1600x1200.
