For some reason I'm having the same issue with crackling audio in the car engines that makes the game pretty much unplayable with how annoying it is to the ear.

I've tried using PodHacks (but it just freezes the game and Windows) & I tried using the original audio from POD and it just used the older sounds, but still crackles.

Has anyone else encountered this issue on Windows 8, or how to resolve the problem?
I might have found a solution. When you install Podhacks in the directory, leave PODX3Dfx.exe unticked in the PodHacks.exe setup file. Otherwise the game will crash after the introductions finish playing. It worked for me.
the sound distortion fixed for me by setting CPU affinity to single core, this is without using Podhacks. i am using windows 10 and i5-4590.

DXWnd is a very useful tool that you can use to set this, among other useful things like letting you alt+tab back into the game, run borderless windowed mode, and CD audio emulation, basically useful for running old games.

after you add the game to DXWnd, under Compat. tab, tick "Block Process Priority Class", and tick "Set single core process affinity".

alternatively, you can create a shortcut to make it single core by doing this (but I strongly recommend the DXWnd method instead because it always works):

create a shortcut of PODX3Dfx.exe, open Properties, in the Shortcut tab add this at the front of Target, without removing any of the current text which points to your game exe:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C START "" /affinity 1

then click Advanced and tick Run as administrator for the shortcut. Always launch using the shortcut.

Solution: Run PODX3Dfx.exe inside the games folder instead of launching it from the client.

this does not work. if you read in the thread several other ppl including myself have found this to not work
Same here. Running on Win10 64bit. Has anyone tried fiddling with surround sound in the game to see if that does anything?
EDIT: I tried messing around with what audio settings the game still lets you toggle and nothing. Anyone else notice a lot of the settings aren't editable? Like I can't change graphics options at all. Someone in another thread said changing the process priority helped them but it didn't do anything for me.

As mentioned by svfn up there, I got it working with DxWnd. I think what fixes the sound stutter is checking the box to force the game to run in a single CPU core. As a bonus, DxWnd also runs perfectly on Linux with Wine.

I uploaded a ZIP with all these fixes combined in a single download link, it's here (game files not included, no pirated game assets here) Simply copy and replace files inside your game directory.

Do anyone still have copies of the PodHacks files and other modifications done over time? It seems all of these were removed for some reason, very sad.
My link up there will never expire, and I would be able to keep copies of these files on my personal server there.

This worked like a charm, thank you so much. I run it on a windows 10 laptop.

A big huge fat virtual hug to you for the affinity tip.
It fixed it for me, the shortcut method.
Thank you very much.
This is my favorite racing game and obviously one of my all time favorite games of all time and since I installed it on this Windows 10 machine I couldn't stand the sound issues. Thank you.
