Am running windows 7 x64

After install, on trying to run game (from shortcut or installation folder)

run normally: black screen, goes on for ever

xp sp2 compatibility mode: error messege "an assertion failed in F:\Torment\Source\chitin\Chitin.cpp at line number 1393
Programmer says: Error initializing key table, bad key file

Am starting to think I should have bought the borderlands dlc after all...

Any help would be much appreciated

Googling seems to bring up nothing I can work with, although it appears this may be a problem with the 1.1 patch (which is automatically included with the GOG version i believe?)

In win 7 are you admin?
Do an uninstall, wipe override install directory, and the reinstall the game ... this is for both OS'es.

Also, have you installed some mods?
If so, see if you've done it in the correct order:
1. Clean install of the game. If you uninstalled, delete the folder altogether.
2. Install thebigg's widescreen mod.
3. Install Ghostdog's UI.
4. Install Qwinn's Fixpack.
5. Install Qwinn's UB.
8. Install Qwinn's Tweakpack.

Yeah im the admin, and have tried running installer as admin/installing inside and outside of the C:\programs folder to try and avoid access problems.

As far as i can tell everytime you uninstall overide directory is wiped?

All i've done so far is run the GOG setup, which i believe comes with the basic mods required to run in 7, but not widescreen, resolution mods, etc

im so excited to play this! ><

Don't install in C:/Program Files.
After the unistall please manually delete in windows explorer any planescape torment directory and only after that do a full install.
Sometimes an automatic unistall does not always delete all the targeted files/directories.

Ok so I:

uninstalled ensuring there were no traces left

restarted computer

ran installer as admin

installed in C:\Planescape

smoked a cigarette

tried to run through compatability troubleshooter (xp mode) mode and still same error

am going to try right-click, run (i.e. without trying to trouubleshoot for compatability) and i imagine its going to freeze my computer so im posting this first so as to avoid wasting my typing efforts.

... and im back after a manual restart... godammit

Sorry mate.
You start the game from the shortcut?
Try starting it directly from windows explorer by double clicking the "Torment.exe" file.
See what happens.

Also, what video card do you have ... have it's latest drivers installed?

Try emptying the temp/cache folder.

When you installed, did you let it run through the file checking thing? From the steps you've listed, my next guess would be corrupted install files
Or corrupt download?
I'm out of ideas
I'm actually in a similar situation to the OP. Windows 7 x64. Installed as admin. Same result from shortcut and executable. Same result when installed inside or outside of C:\Program Files\. Same result when run in XP SP2 compatability mode. Installer successfully checked the integrity of the install archive. I get a black screen and a faint whistling which repeats once or twice before the game crashes entirely.
So you've not installed the retail patch on the gog-patched game?

Were you modding it and did you mod BEFORE loading the game? I've had issues with that before

i havent tried to install any mods, only installed the game from the gog setup download which comes ready patched.

And yeah, it did pass file integrity. Am going to try another download just in case though
My worst fear. Good luck mate!
just found this:

http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/Online/torment_vista.html
clean download/install also fails

luckily i just got a copy of starcraft 2 to enjoy :D

still... i want my retro fix...

anyone else tried and failed to submit problem to gog technical support?
There seems to be similiar problem here (in the middle of the page), but it was related to Games Explorer.

It sounds like that error appears when game cannot find certain files or they became corrupted. If you installed the game on C:, why error points to F:?
