No one replied to my topic so I am trying again.

Tried playing Torment again and now I know why I quit before. After about 5 minutes of gameplay the screen blips to the Mage spell folder for no reason. It takes several button presses of other buttons to get it back to main screen and then the 'run' button is always turned off and I have to go into options to fix it. Also I'll be in the middle of a conversation and it will blip out and be at the end before I've had a chance to ask all the questions. Sometimes the characters get stuck in place. I can hear the sounds, etc. but they won't move. Just recently, I've had it start automatically saving games every few seconds without me doing it. Just seems really bugged. I have Windows XP and have had no problems with other games. Are there any patches for this game? Or any other fixes?? I would like to be able to play this game but the bugs are extremely frustrating. I can't get more than 1 or 2 minutes of gameplay before it starts going crazy. Thanks!

P.S. I tried downloading and applying the mods I saw on other forums but I can't get those to work either!!

I run XP and have never had these problems.

Are you running a cordless mouse or keyboard ? Additional software such as Logitech control Center ? A keyboard remapper ?

sure sounds like a wireless problem.. i remember a friend of mine being unable to use quick-slots in diablo 2, due to having both a wireless mouse and keyboard :)
I hope people are still replying to this as I am having similar problems. Random menus pop up, menus will randomly close, weird sounds will be spammed over and over and its just gotten to the point I dont think the game is worth the time of figuring this out. Ive tried everything. Installed every fix. NOTHING WORKS. I must say its the must frustrating thing Ive ever encountered in gaming. I dont have any wireless devices either so I really just dont know what it is. I thought the scroll/num lock issue might be it but it wasnt. If anyone has any clue what could be the problem please do tell because I think this will be the last time I reinstall/uninstall this game.

What do the random menus say, what menus close automatically? That's important. They may give you a hint of some kind.

I've M&M 1-IX all installed under 8.1x64 and have no such problems, nor have I ever had such problems with these games through several Windows OSes. Sounds like it's some other software program you are running (definitely)--or you have a virus of some kind or some sort of nasty malware. Or, it could be that your AV program is causing you some problems with these older games--only one I've trusted for about a decade now is Microsoft Security Essentials. It does a great job, generates no false positives, and has a very light footprint--it isn't the slightest bit invasive--compared to, say, AVG or Norton's or (Lord help you if you are using this last one), McAfee's! Also, it's a good idea if you suspend background programs like Windows Update or Steam Update while playing these games, as older games like to have control of the machine and something running in the background like that can make some older games go bananas, throw you right out of the game, etc.

About the only thing I can tell you for *certain* is that the problem does not lie in the M&M game code. Another good question you need to answer is how you are running these games: through Dosbox and if so, what version? Or, are you running them through some of the DOS "front-ends" that are circulating--as *those* may well have bugs that will cause your game to display this kind of behavior. You have many things to check out before you solve the problem, but I'm 100% sure it is solvable and it *isn't* buggy M&M game code that is to blame (if it was then everyone would have these problems and almost no one is.)

Edit: I meant to add--Planescape: Torment to the list above instead of the M&M games. Sorry...;) Same exact advice, though, except for the DOsBox advice, of course.

Its only in game menus popping up. I guess its key presses like M for map, J for journal, or I for inventory (just as examples of the types of menus popping up) and its never the same menus twice after relaunching the game. I believe last time I tried Baldurs gate 2 I had the same problem so Im assuming it is some software I currently used clashing with these games but the only one that is constantly running is Razer synapse and thats for my mouse and keyboard.. So I can see how that could be a problem but after testing it without this program installed I still have the problems. Its all in game the problems im running into and its only once I gain control to move freely after talking to the floating skull.
Okay so Ive just attempted Baldurs gate 2 and Ive run into the same problem and have a more accurate idea of what is happening. One ive rolled my character and am prompted to input a name and the menu appears "afhdjfkjlahflkjdfgkjlgkjahglkjd" or something of the sort appears in the prompt which leads me to believe its my current keyboard causing the problem (Razer blackwidow ultimate). Will try with a different keyboard and get back. Odd I havent heard of other people with this problem as the keyboard is fairly common.
Well after using a different keyboard and having the problem still persist I decided to just unplug the keyboard all together and launch the game but ITS STILL HAPPENING. I give. Im done. A year on and I still cant get it to work so I think its about time I let these gems go. Its not worth it anymore.
Did you reboot your computer after changing the keyboard?

I understand your frustration, but before giving up on the games for good -- which would be a shame, to be honest, since both titles are great -- I would highly recommend contacting GOG support via the specific PS:T support page (found here: PS:T Support page). I'm glad these subforums exist and that the community is so helpful, plus, it helps filter the issues people can solve without resorting to GOG support and over-burden them, but when the community help fails you can definitely rely on GOG's support team, they have been able to solve most problems when no one else could.

So, if you hadn't already, try reaching them.

[EDIT] In case the page I linked above doesn't help, try asking the team directly, by going to this link
