I just started playing Planescape: Torment and I really want to become a mage. I didn't want spoilers but I did look up a couple of things, I know to become a mage you need to talk with Mebbeth and the other highly recommended thing is to get Dak'kon right away.

If I go to get Dak'kon and then see Mebbeth before doing anything else in the Hive after exiting the mortuary will it retract anything from the overall experience? Should this be fine or would it be better to travel around following the quests and not see Mebbeth until I have to actually go to the square and not get Dak'kon until I have to go to South East hive?

Thanks!

No problem in that. You can change your class later, if you regret. It's not a permanent thing.
Starting as a mage won't ruin your experience.

The square is not far away in a "normal" playthough without metaknowledge anyway. Y'ou'd go there soon. It's not like you'd sneak in places way over your level to get an advantage. Same thing for Dakkon - it feels better if you find him "by chance" but now you know where he is, there is no reason to avoid him. You're basically free to wonder once you leave the mortuary so go there. Most people who already played the game would grab Dakkon ASAP too, he makes your life easier. :)

You're free to play the way you like it, but for a first playthough, I would really recommand to avoid spoilers... Unless at some points, when you already have explored and want to know if you missed something, but not before. Anyway, enjoy your game, no matter how :)

As long as you become a mage before you hit level 7 (since it's the level at which you get a first specialization bonus and you want the mage one), you can get Dak'kon and see Mebbeth whenever.
They're very close to the start of the game anyway, so you'll get there early enough unless you try to avoid them.

And as Gabby2 said, do try to avoid spoilers on your first playthrough. Combat is mostly easy enough, and I don't think there's anything you can lose permanently, so you don't need a walkthrough to finish, although you'll probably miss some of the hidden stuff.
Thanks everyone for your responses.

Once I get out of the mortuary on my new build I'm going to go right down and get Dak'kon and then go speak with Mebbeth. After I become a mage I'll go back to North East hive and quest around like normal!

I'm definitely not going to spoiler myself and am going to stop looking stuff up, this was just driving me nuts and I wanted to make sure it was OK to do those things right away :)
