Hi!

So I was playing for ~5h yesterday, and had 3 saves. Today after a reboot of my computer my saves are gone.

Last thing I did was alt+f4 in rage from dying to bandits, does the game do anything with saves when you die (I also altf4 cuz it skips a few "Your application has crashed" messages after quitting normally)? At this point I'm more curious as to what happened than to get my save back.

I play on windows 8.1, the vanilla gog game. If there's supposed to be a saves folder in the game dir, I don't have it.

Thanks for reading!

Anrik21: ...
By default, PS:T does store saves in the game directory ("[Install path]\save", each save is a folder with 6 files in it), and they aren't affected by death (why would they when you just respawn immediately after death? There's no need to ragequit over that btw, you'll just have to walk a bit from wherever you wake up).

If you've installed the game into Program Files (which is a bad idea), it could put saves into some oddball location, like Win7 loved to do ("C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files", or something of that sort). In that case it could have access issues, although I'm pretty sure the game runs with admin rights by default.
Thanks for the response!

I realized my error;

In an attempt to install some mods I moved a copy of my installation to /users/<username> in an attempt to install it there. Which didn't work. See where I'm going?

So today when I tried to play the game from the original install directory, of course there are no savefiles, that game was never played.

Silly mixup, thanks for your response though! :)

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "it didn't work"? And it's generally easier to create a neutral location for gaming purposes, like "C:\Games", this way the OS won't care about what you do with the files at all.
Yup I got one of those directories, the creator of the mod suggested somewhere in their forum about making it in the <username>-directory, so I gave it a shot.

I tried installing the widescreen mod and it just wouldn't work. From the log something goes wrong with TB#010.bif. I saw a post about it on their forum but just decided to play vanilla :)

Alright, here's a very stupid question, but I'm still curious...

When you made a copy of the install folder, did you edit torment.ini to point to the new location? Because IIRC the mod gets the folder data from that file, and if it still pointed to the original folder (in Program Files), the mod would try to install there and get an access error as a result.

(Although, if other mods install correctly, it might just be some random glitch...)

I just tested that, interesting, never thought that it would do that.

Though it did not work! Same error though, so it might be something related to Win 8.1. Now that I've found my saves I'll happily play it unmodded! :)

Do you happen to have a log file from your failed install attempt? It clearly shouldn't have permission issues in the user folder, and, assuming you're using the latest mod version, it should also have the updated installer that is compatible with Win8.1. I'm not sure why you'd have an outdated mod version, though.

It's also a good idea to back up your saves when messing with the game, this way you'll at least know where they are so if something goes wrong you can just reinstall the whole thing and put them back.

I used version 3.06. And yeah, now that I've realised I was just stupid with which directory I was running the game from, I backed it up before trying it again.

Here's a pastebin to the .debug file. http://pastebin.com/1912JXHh

And now I just tried it one last time and it worked, I used (which is to me, but settings are probably that it's my main monitor for some reason) my 2nd monitor, which has 1680x1050(also, putting in the wrong resolution way too many times doesn't help) which worked. Sigh. So yeah, user stupidity seems to be the theme in this thread.

That's not user stupidity, you've no idea what people sometimes do to their software... :)
