Have you tried running the exe files from a command prompt with Admin rights? That has worked for others who couldn't get the game up and running.

Ok, I tried it, but exactly the same crash happened. No difference trying to run it with any of the different install locations, admin or no admin, through XP mode, or anything. :/

Please verify that your installer is correctly downloaded. Use an MD5 checksum utility like MD5summer or Nero MD5 Verifier to generate a hash of your file.
The correct hash should be: 0b169b7d08209fac461610c8e8c0c0da

Sear beat me to it. It's starting to sound as if there is something very wrong with your download. Try re-downloading, maybe on a different PC.

No change. I'll just have to wait for them to get around to processing my support ticket, i guess. :/ Thank goodness there is always Civ5 ;)

Sounds to me like it could be some weird permissions error, driver error... anything really. Do you have any issues with other old games? The newest drivers for your system? Maybe you should try reinstalling DirectX, .NET Framework, and so forth just to make sure some files aren't corrupted.

I have a Toshiba A665-3DV. Since I got this laptop, I haven't tried many of my GOG games, but Arkham Asylum plays fine, but there is some glitch with Amnesia. Civ5 is fine.
I'll see what I can find out, but I'm wondering if it isn't some weird driver issue.

That happens on every system I've ever played it on, disc version or gog version. It doesn't make a difference or do any damage so I'd suggest just ignoring it

Got the game to work using Dazzle's fix from here: http://www.shsforums.net/topic/30840-ie-games-and-nvidia-series-8-video-cards/page__st__60__p__432892&#entry432892
Of course, I have the same problem with Icewind Dale now, but we will see what happens...

Ok...this is rather odd, but I inadvertently stopped the game from crashing on exit in Win7x64. I've been having issues with the game crashing while playing as well. It usually happens whenever I'm entering or exiting locations. I've tried everything that I can think of, and everything I've read about on this and other forums. I finally decided to go ahead and try a little app called D3DWindower, so I can run the game windowed and it can also emulate DirectDraw. I read about this from a post made by ghostdog, over at Spellbound Studios. http://www.shsforums.net/topic/43616-how-to-deal-with-the-ddraw-problems-of-pst-and-other-ie-games/ He posted a download link for the English version of the program as well. Here is a link to a page that also translates it. http://sites.google.com/site/kiomimcgurn/d3dwindower
GhostDog's post mainly addressed graphics glitches with modern hardware (artifacts, choppy framerates, stuttering), which I haven't had any problems with on my ATI card. I've only had problems with the game crashing during game play, and on exit. However, I'm willing to try just about anything to stop the crashes, so I tried this. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, then set up this D3DWindower application, then I installed the widescreen mod and UI mod. I've just started a new game, so I don't know yet or not, if this will alleviate the crashes during game play, that are usually happening when entering and exiting locations. As soon as I've had enough playing time to evaluate whether or not the crashes during the game have stopped, I will post my results.
After setting my resolution with the widescreen mod, and setting up this application to launch the game, I decided to go ahead and try Creative Alchemy, again, just to see if the game would recognize it, with the off chance that I could get EAX sound in the game. Well, it doesn't recognize it in the audio options menu, but something about the dsound ini and/or the dsound dll in the game folder, while running the game windowed with the D3DWindower application, keeps the game from crashing when exiting. I'm not quite sure why yet, but it does, because I've put the files into the game folder, and taken them out 6 times each. The game crashed on exit after every time I took the dsound ini and dsound dll out, and it didn't crash on exit after every time I put the files back in the game folder. I don't know if this is specific to running the game in windowed mode, or using that D3DWindower application, or both. I haven't tried Creative Alchemy while running the game windowed without using this app, to see if it crashes on exit. The game won't run windowed at higher resolutions using the widescreen mod without the D3DWindower application, and I'm not going to uninstall the widescreen mod just to find out.
Edit: I ran the torment.exe file without using the D3DWindower program this time, and it still doesn't crash on exit. I can't explain it, because I've tried using Alchemy in the past, and the game still crashed on exit every single time before. When I disable Alchemy, it crashes on exit. Strange...
Edit: Ok,, this issue also happens to do with compatibility mode, apparently. If the torment.exe is executed in compatibility mode, the game crashes on exit, regardless of whether or not the Creative Alchemy files are in the game folder. If it's not run in compatibility mode, and the Creative Alchemy files are the game folder, it won't crash on exit. If they aren't in the folder, it will crash on exit. Go figure, but that's the case on my Win7x64 machine.
