I'm curious about the differences between these two versions as I remember playing the Genesis version of Pirates! Gold years ago. I've never played the PC version. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Genesis version of Pirates! Gold is based off the Amiga CD32 version, but without the FMV or CD Audio Music I believe.

This is in my opinion the best version of the original PIRATES!; it's a shame that GoG.com didn't find a way to offer either the Genesis or Amiga CD32 version.

And yes, I still own my Genesis Pirates Gold Cartridge :D

They sell PC games so of course there not going to get those versions.
The genesis version looks more cartoonish while the PC version looks and feels more realistic.
The genesis version was made for playing with gamepad while the PC version was made for playing with mouse.
I hated the cartoony looks of the Genesis/Amiga CD32 version of Pirates! Godl, though I don't really like the bad oil-painting-filtered art of the PC version either. The definitive version is, for me, the original Amiga version, the one that was just called Sid Meier's Pirates!. It also had better music. I still remember the Microprose logo, raising of the anchor, the seagulls and the following title theme. Such a fantastic atmosphere to start off the game.

I fully agree. The classic amiga version had the best atmosphere.
Gameplay is the same on all classic versions however.
