It seems that saving has become an afterthought for a lot of devs. I do not know if I am in the minority on this, but a proper save function is important to me, at least.

I also do not know who at Slipgate Ironworks makes those decisions, but Phantom Fury follows on the 'we don't care to implement a proper manual save function' mentality of both Wrath and Graven, both of which I backed in EA in the hopes their save systems would be temporary solutions - shows I'm not cynical enough, yet, I guess.

This time, however, I learned my lesson. I know one lost sale means nothing to anyone, but I want to at least have said it so I know the devs have a chance to know:

I love retro shooters in the vein of Quake, Duke and SiN, and as stated, I am prepared to shell out a few bucks just to give a few hopefuls a better chance at seeing an actual release date.

Not being able to save at will has now become a reason to not buy a title for me - I am an adult with regrettably adult responsibilities and limited free time. I do not appreciate when a game wastes my time by limiting when and how often I can save, and having to redo parts of a level I already did serves nothing but to annoy me.
And I do not play games that annoy me as a result of an easily preventable design flaw.

As such: I've had Phantom Fury on my wishlist for a long time, even after the tepid reception to the demo. I was camp "let them cook". In fact, I have just put fresh funds into my GOG wallet for a bit of weekend shopping, with my eye on Phantom Fury. [edit: Shout-out to GmanLives for actually mentioning the save system!]. Sadly, SI cooked without salt, my copy stays unbought, and the funds go to other titles.

I doubt anyone will care enough to patch in a proper save function, so I guess I will be replaying Ion Fury for my Shelly fix, and I can tell you: I will be properly appreciating the fact it comes with a fully fledged save system.

Never mind my chagrin, though; Have a good weekend, everyone, and may at least something nice happen to all y'all!

THIS!
Seems like manual saving is going the way of the dinosaur with pretty much every game franchise you can think of. I don't understand why, it's annoying! Most people say it's because "iT mAkEs TeH gAeM eAsIeR" and I suppose in some aspects it does but who cares! Why does something that has no effect on anyone else matter so much?? If you want to make the game harder for yourself, then don't use the save function! Rely on autosaves only, plenty of games have both so it's not like it can't be done, but no. If the game is easier for you then it shouldn't be easy for anyone else. I can't stand this mentality! It simply punishes those who have things to do in life. All so some neckbeard can pat himself on the back knowing he 100% the game on the hardest difficulty without manually saving once. Great job! I'm sure your parents are very proud.

Anyway I feel ya bro. I 100% agree that manual saves should stay, but no. Heaven forbid you can get through a game without having to do an entire section all over again due to having a life or the game just simply crashing. Saddens me that I'm literally the only person who seemingly agrees and took the time to reply but so be it. One is better than none, right?

Absolutely! In the mean time, I just looked at the 25€ for Phantom Fury in my hands, and Selaco popped up on Steam. I usually do not buy a lot of stuff there any more, but since the dev said he did contact GOG without reply, I made an exception, and bought that instead.

...After making sure that it had proper saving. The only tiny downside is that you can't save during an ongoing firefight, but this has not really been a problem so far. On the one hand, those fights are short and intense, so you rarely even have the time to think about saving - on the other, the enemies are extremely deadly even on medium difficulty, like using squad tactics, and nothing would bum me out more than quicksaving right before a flanker opens fire on me and cuts me down (ttk is really low, even on full health and armour).

Plus, the game also allows for rotating quicksaves in case you do manage to save yourself into a frelled up state, which is just nice to see.
And honestly: Lack of free saving doesn't make a game harder anyway. In fact, I'd say you can tune a game harder that allows manual saving, because you don't *have* to build the game in a way where the player has to be able to make it through an arbitrary section in one go. The only thing save point systems do is increase the punishment on the player, and the repetition of content. It is, to me, simply not good game design to forgo manual saving.

...Anyway: Thanks for your reply, it truly is appreciated. I hope you have great weekend!
I want proper manual save function NOW!
What A.... thinks its not needed......
Is ther any mods?
