The game is much better under SCUMM, but it has problems. Specifically, the game will crash any time you try to active some of the easter eggs. The "batman" and "female coworker login" ones don't work.

I'm also curious why the GOG version of the game has problems with audio that's "within the world" so to speak. Clicking on the photo of Blob in your cubicle doesn't play the sound clip, just the subtitles (which didn't exist in the Windows version, if I recall correctly). This also affects the phone ringing when Bob calls you on the second (or third, I can't remember) day.

They got rid of the DOSBox version. I'd guess it'll probably get added via extras though, if this problem never gets fixed. I'd prefer they fix the problem though. The game runs much better on SCUMMVM if they just fixed those easter eggs (which is half the fun of the game).


However, if you just want to play it via SCUMMVM, and have the current version, just download SCUMMVM from their website and it works out of the box.

From my experience this kind of bugs are problem with ScummVM interpreter itself and if you want them to get fix you should send bug report to ScummVM team and maybe they fix it in future release :)

But my question was little different: is there a posibility to get files provided with new GOG instaler and use them with DOSBox because ScummVM dosn't need all game files to run the game. E.g. in Indiana Jones and Fate of Atlantis instaler is for ScummVM but there is additional directory called "other" with files needed to play it in DOSBox such as atlantis.exe

I could be very, very wrong, but I think that's a problem with the data files, not ScummVM. If examine the photo of Blob in a version of the game I've put together from the original CD's, using the instructions in the ScummVM Wiki, it does play the "You're such a pretty girl, Blob" sound. If I try it in the GOG version, ScummVM shows it as text and prints the warning "WARNING: [Audio32::play]: audio36.4000(2, 45, 2, 1) could not be found!".

I'm not really familiar with the inner workings of the SCI engine, but I can see that when the game starts it creates an index of all (?) the game resources, assigning each of them a unique name. In the non-GOG version, it finds audio36.4000(2, 45, 2, 1) in the resaud.005 file. The fifth chapter of the game, I guess, but it's probably present in the previous four chapters as well. With the game spread over multiple CDs, there's bound to be some duplication to keep the players sane.

In the GOG version, I can't see that it finds these resources at all. Could it be that they were accidentally left out when the resource files were combined? (I assume that's what they did, since there only appears to be one resource file of each type, rather than one from each CD.)

Yes, the data files included in the GOG release are broken. It seems like they have been patched by a bad tool.

The cause is another missing audio file, which is actually present but can't be loaded due to a corrupted index.

Did anyone contact GOG support over that? I can't really do it myself, because I have to include a system report and GOG doesn't officially support Phantasmagoria 2 for my operating system...

You can still get download the dosbox version by 'rollback' option in Gog Galaxy.

But developers of scummvm do need to fix the windows sound glitches that are reverting to subtitles do to missing voice files.

I don't see how. According to the comments in the bug reports I linked to earlier, ScummVM can't play these sounds because the data files GOG are shipping are broken. The data for the sounds isn't there any more.

I went and installed the game on a Windows computer just so I could reproduce it and file a bug report, but all I got was a lot of hemming and hawing about how maybe there was some legal reason they couldn't modify the game. Which makes absolutely no sense to me, because they already modified it. That's why it's broken. It works if I use the data files from my original CDs. (Well, the sounds work. Those obscure easter eggs mentioned earlier don't because ScummVM is missing an implementation for that particular feature.)

Maybe they'd get the point if others reported the problem to them as well, but so far I'm not impressed with GOG's handling of this.

Ok by fix it I mean GOG replacing the game with the game with isos taken from the original cds without the problem.... They may have worked with corrupted source material, and it might go all the way up to Activision unfortunately...


I wonder if the files could be included as a downloadable ';patch' somewhere? Or would that require actually uploading most of the game files?

The good news is that apparently the development version of ScummVM now has support for these two easter eggs:

The bad news is that GOG have proven unwilling or unable to provide a non-broken version of the game, so the missing sounds are still missing. I've long since given up on trying to convince them.

It looks like GOG updated Phantasmagoria 2 to fix the bug with missing sounds (though I've only tried the one I know how to find; I'm not that familiar with - or fond of - the game), but I don't know if they also updated to a version of ScummVM that fixes the broken easter eggs.

I just finished playing and can confirm that the missing sounds are working now.

I'm not sure about the easter eggs though, i only tried a couple and they seemed to be working fine.

The ScummVM version is still the same (2.0.0).

I think some of the easter eggs require ScummVM 2.2.0 (or later). One of the changes listed is "Fixed Phantasmagoria 2 error when attempting easter eggs." I think it's about the ones where a text entry box is supposed to pop up.
