Alright, I've played through Phantasmagoria 2, and from what I can gather many of you here think of it as a good game. WHY? I mean this game is just so shoddily designed. For one there is no direction whatsoever, the "puzzles" are nonsensical, and the characters (besides Trevor, and maybe Paul Warner because he's hilarious) are unlikeable and annoying, and besides a few creepy moments the game fails to deliver any actual scares. Am I missing something or what?

You have pretty much described the consensus from the media when PHAN2 came out. It was at the tail end of the FMV adventure game heyday, so it holds a special place in many people's hearts. It also drew a lot of controversy for the mature themes, as did the first game - so you could probably classify it more or less as a 'cult classic'. I personally bought the game for the nostalgia factor, and I'm also a completest as I own the first one.
I think most people would agree that it's not among Sierra's finest efforts. But it's quite enjoyable in a "so-bad-its-good" kind of way, like a cheesy B-grade horror movie.

There's also a hilarious riffed MST3K-style video playthrough, done by a well-known internet personality that's added much to the cult status of the game in recent years. Worth a watch.
Yeah I saw Spoony's LP of it, it was great. I do agree with the so-bad-its-good factor, but I spent more time becoming enraged at the lack of direction than I spent laughing my ass off at the ridiculous plot and bad acting.

And rj, thanks for the explanation, I didn't take the nostalgia factor into account.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I didn't walk into it knowing it would be very bad, I just love FMV games and wanted to give it a shot.
