Hi,
I've been playing Patrician for sometime now and found these three tips useful so I thought I'd pass them on.
1) This gets round a problem when Patrician crashes and corrupts its message queues. That is whenever you click on messages and then select the message type you want to read the game crashes. I have seen this a number of times and its really annoying having to go back a even 30 minutes to your last save. To get around this go to the message option and then options for messages set the message type that is causing you problems to always delete. Go back to the game. Wait for a few minutes and the queue gets deleted and you can reset the delete messages option to what you want.
2) When playing the single player game you will no doubt setup loads of auto trade routes. When these complete you get a bell and a message. When you have 20-30 routes all going this produces a continuous annoyance. To stop just the "Ship trade" messages simply add a new town as the first in the auto trade list and mark it so the auto trader does not stop there. (-) Your ship will not travel to the town or spend any time performing the stop. It then means you can get the tax report :-( oh boy that tax is so high. You will also see when your expedition ships have returned from the Med or America.
3) At some point you will come across a pirate that is too quick for your pirate hunter. The pirate will always run away and make it. The answer is simple you need to slow him down. Since you cannot catch him to blast him with canon, You need another way. But , if he was loaded with cargo he will be slower. So all you need to do is send a ship full of cargo shadowed by your pirate hunter or even in convoy with the cargo ship. Let the pirate attach and plunder the cargo ship. He will now be slow enough to catch and you get your cargo back. Not only that but you stop the pirate and get a new ship.
Hope that helps

Nice to know - thanks, mate.
Some more tips

You can have a ship sit at one city and keep loading goods until it is full. You need to set four stops in auto trade and have it skip two of the stops. For example if you send a ship to Cologne to fill up with wine.
Bergen - Set it to skip this city (-)
Cologne - Set it to buy wine (X)
Bergen - Set it to skip this city (-)
Cologne - Set it to buy wine (X)

If you want a city to expand the military they are more likely to vote yes is you propose a vote while the city is under attack.

When the city completes building a wall you will get billed 150K or more depending on the size of the wall. When you become Patrician about one year before Mayors election have the city vote on expanding the walls. The current mayor will start wall construction and when you become Mayor most of the wall is complete and you can finish the last section without being billed.
The advices in this thread are really helpful!

In particular, the (1) advice from Zafrusteria is very, very good. Roughly half of the time when I take 'patrol on a route, and if somebody attacks you I would pay $$ for each attack' quest in tavern's side room, the issue appears and the game crashes.
Sometimes one can work around the issue by simply reading the message for the patrol a minute later than it appears - if you are lucky, the message is displayed without crashing. For sure, it is better to save a minute in advance before you take such quest, and if the game crashes, you can simply load the saved game and switch on temporarily the deletion of personal messages. Finally, one can simply ignore such quests, there are many other things you can do in Patrician.

IMO, content in threads like this one deserves to be put in a 'sticky' FAQ thread on top of the forum.
