I started playing this on my older laptop but the HD version was running poorly, so I went for the original. I think I was at around day 4-5. After I got to my desktop, I switched to the HD.
You definitely find more stuff in the HD. Not only is there more stuff in containers, there's also less empty containers. For example, in HD, you'll almost always have more water than there are bandages for trade. Some changes to prices have been done as well I think. And later on, you have so much different stuff from containers that inventory space becomes an issue even during bachelor campaign.
GAMEPLAY SPOILER:
If you're having problems with supplies, here's two tips: Hoard as much stuff as possible and spend all your money on day 1. Sell everything for massive profit on day 2. The game even hints on multiple occasions that you should do it. Don't sells scraps other than razors or other expensive ones. They're worth more as trade items still (technically, so are razors, but you're not always able to "spend" it's worth in trades).
Once arsonists start appearing (day 6), you want to have a rifle (get it earlier) and buy as much ammo for it as possible (Bad Grief has a bunch every day). Each arsonist carries more money than a rifle bullet costs and they also carry some aditional supplies, so it is profitable to kill them, not to mention effortless and quick (altough their death animation is painfully slow). Also remember that revolver ammo sells for more money than rifle ammo (despite being cheaper in trades with kids), so make rifle your primary firearm and when you need money, sell revolver ammo.
END SPOILER
Either way, I would recommend the HD classic because of the better translation. At first, some dialogues in the original just seem weird, but eventually you'll get to sentences which are completely unintelligible and you may not even understand certain plots because of it. So I would certainly recommend playing the HD classic.
