Venatoris78: Hi InEffect.

After all DLCs and Patches, do you have a Top 3 in? In relation to Damage?
Splitted in Melee, Ranged and Magic? :-)
avatar
InEffect: Top melee damage: STR saint, Trip vivi, Melee sorc, STR abyssal scion19/SF1.
Top magic&ranged&CC: AT sorc.
Top phys ranged: Slayer/EA2 cause study is bugged to hell.
Top phys-ish ranged that aint stupidly bugged: Scoundrel8/EA2/EK10 for oneshotting stuff with the help of hellfire rays on round1 and general decent DPS, especially when going nova with free additional rays come EK10.
InEffect, you mention the str abyssal scion here, but the only build i can find is the first one in this guide with dex. how would you change this to make it the abyssal str scion? Really enjoying the dex one so far. curious how the str one with abyssal is built.

Pretty much the same as STR saint, but with vanquisher(and staff prior to that) 19/14/14/7/7/16 human or 18/15/12/10/7/18 Aasimar. The latter has 2 more AC by 4, so that's what I'd likely pick. SF1/Scion19 results in spell access, which is nice and would help cover for the gap between saint and scion.

Looks alright. Although you won't need blindfight as you;d get echolocation from spell access and you don't need improved crit as you can get it from arcane weapon for free and you'd have 1 point leftover after axiomatic+holy anyways. You can get greater weapon focus and something else. Power attack is not bad late as you'd get well over 50AB buffed anyways.

And don't use axes just cause you've got focus. Staves will be better in the earlygame due to an extra attack.

Thanks again. appreciate all the work you've put into all of this.

assuming this build is no armor extra points into STR to 22, yes?

Hey, wanted to know if I made the right build choice for what I'm after in a character.

I was immediately drawn to the Sorcerer because I like flashy offense oriented magic with good damage output as well as high charisma characters that can force conversations in the intended direction (tends to be one of my favored archetypes in similar games).

Went for the "But what about Dragons!?" build because I was leaning towards either Draconic or Arcane bloodline and the former just has a more interesting twist and lets me be a bit more reckless later on with a sturdy dragon form.
Anyway, been only playing for a little while (lvl 3 soon) but right now it feels like my usefulness is tied to the amount of Burning Hands charges I have which would probably feel even less impressive if my party had other forms of AoE.

The Sorcerer class feels like it'll need a few lvls before it gets going so I'm not super worried yet, it's just a bit depressing to run up and ineffectively slap something with my quarterstaff wearing no armor at all when all the other characters are much better armed and armored. Ranged enemies especially seem to pick up on my unarmored state and appear to focus-fire my PC a lot (playing with turn based mod so it's easy to tell).

The lvl 1 claws are also super underwhelming and end up not really being any better than my quarterstaff, I'm hopeful that changes as it levels up but its poor amount of charges also feels like a real hindrance, maybe I overcome it with charisma gear and the additional ability points on level ups.

I guess I just wanted to complain and have someone affirm that it's a rocky start but gets more fun in a while.

That sorc was made mostly cause I wanted to do a shapeshifting sorc. As such sacrifices were made. As you can;t reasonably fit in both melee and casting and make both perform. AT sorc is a better offensive caster by a huge margin. And melee sorc is a far better... well... melee. Sapeshifting in general was quite shafted when they fixed the dice stacking, so no more 200 damage attacks on a dragon FeelsBadMan.

As to the early levels it really depends and is always a compromise of some sort. Damaging spells suck for a good portion of the game till you get robes and/or amulet for +1 damage/dice rolled which ends up being huge. And then there are endgame rods that boost that good damage again.
What makes sorc insane early is utility. So grease, stinking cloud, pits and all that with conjuration or web and slow with transmutation if you feel you need some extra suffer in your life. With dismissal mod transmutation is more usable, but you'll still burn through quite some FoM scrolls/spell slots instead of just 1 communal delay poison in case of conjuration. And transmutation is generally tailored to a range-heavy party, which I personally don't favor too much.

Claws are ok on a melee sorc. The one in question is not really one. At least not till he gets to early teens.

While looking around to see how people built their sorcerers (never played pathfinder PnP before, so unfamiliar with rulesets etc.) I saw people mentioning sorc ray builds with AT and stealth dice synergy but then I also read that stealth dice had previously been broken and were fixed to grant only 1 instance of sneak attack per spell.

Some builds suggested that instead of wasting feat slots on point blank shot and precise shot, those feat slots could be used in better ways and one could build around penetration and ignore ranged touch spells.
And getting to put nearly all level ups into Sorcerer would have a significant impact on your spells instead of investing so much into AT.

So that's what I felt like the Dragon build was going for, having a big steroid/oh-shit CD to soak damage and a bunch of claw/bite attacks to conserve spell usage looked nice for a caster. I thought of it more as a pure spell caster than a hybrid since everyone seemed to be in agreement that Draconic Bloodlines were the best for nuking stuff even if you only saw the transformation as a bonus.

Anyway, I'd be more interested in a specialized build instead of being mediocre at both casting spells and melee combat.
So how does the AT sorc feel like to play in terms of getting to use spells? I hate the idea of having to play overly conservative and only rarely getting to blow things up, in that case I'd be more interested to go for the melee dragon build.

That's how proper sorc/AT does. In late-game that is. There is literally no way to deal adequate damage without items, so every sorc is a control sorc for 70% of the game. Last 30% AT one pounces about oneshotting everything in existence. I generally prefer my sorcs as mercs cause I can start the game with sylvan and end it with an AT and sorc doesn't need 25 PB, but there is no reason it can't work just as fine as MC.

Oh and on the point-blank and precise shot... There is no reason not to get em. Casters have way too many spare feats anyway. And rays are useful, especially when you add sneak dice. Sure there is that bow with PB/Precise, but it's in midgame and it takes the slot that could be used for arcane protectors or ruin.

Alright, thanks for breaking it down for me.

I really want to do most of the work myself so summoners or debuffers aren't really my thing, most appealing choice to me right now looks like switching to melee sorc and in the lategame maybe giving sorc/AT a try.

InEffect: Dex Scion

Role: Tank/Front-line Damage Dealer

Race: Human
Alignment: Lawful-Good
Bloodline: Draconic(Fire)

Stats:
Str: 7
Dex: 18
Con: 14
Int: 7
Wis: 8
Cha: 19 > 24

Final Build: Magus(Eldritch Scion) 19/Monk(Scaled Fist) 1

Main skills: Mobility 3, Persuasion Max
Suggested secondary skills: Use Magic Devices Spare

Detailed leveling breakdown:
Lvl 1: Magus - Weapon Finesse // Dodge
Lvl 2: Monk - Crane Style
Lvl 3: Magus - Weapon Focus: Longsword
Lvl 4: Magus - Arcane Accuracy
Lvl 5: Magus - Slashing Grace: Longsword
Lvl 6: Magus - Outflank
Lvl 7: Magus - Crane Wing // Enduring Blade
Lvl 8: Magus
Lvl 9: Magus - Dazzling Display
Lvl 10: Magus - Ghost Blade
Lvl 11: Magus - Shatter Defenses
Lvl 12: Magus - Spell Focus: Evocation
Lvl 13: Magus - Crane Riposte // Devoted Blade
Lvl 14: Magus
Lvl 15: Magus - Greater Spell Focus: Evocation
Lvl 16: Magus - Bane Blade
Lvl 17: Magus - Elemental Focus: Fire
Lvl 18: Magus - Greater Elemental Focus: Fire
Lvl 19: Magus - Greater Weapon Focus: Longsword // Prescient Attack*
Lvl 20: Magus
*Optional

Spells by level in order of importance:
Lvl 1: Shocking Grasp, Shield, Grease, True Strike, Vanish, Reduce Person
Lvl 2: Frigid Touch, Mirror Image, Web, Glitterdust, Scorching Ray
Lvl 3: Haste, Displacement, Fireball, Vampiric Touch
Lvl 4: Dragon's Breath, Dimension Door, Stoneskin, Greater Invisibility, Controlled Fireball
Lvl 5: Fire Snake, Cloudkill, Vampiric Shadow Shield, Cone of Cold
Lvl 6: Transformation, Sirocco, Hellfire Ray, Dispel Magic(Greater)

Greater Spell Access:
Sense Vitals, Heroism(Greater), Geniekind, Icy Prison, Burning Arc, Angelic Aspect

Gear: +Stat Items. Longsword, Fire Robes, Monk Robes(when you find them), +AC items, Opportunist's boots

Early-game anti-suffer advice:
Take Tartuccio’s Crossbow and make him use cantrips in the prologue. Keep a dagger on you in case you will need to burst something with Shocking Grasp. Use crossbows till you find Agile Pick under the Old Sycamore. From level 5 you switch to longsword for life. Grease and Web will help you solving early-game.

Double-dipping, AC/AB/Damage stacking:
- AC from Cha through monk, Monk feats. AC from Bloodline, Free wings @lvl16, AC from Spells
- AB through Arcane Weapon. AB from Cha through Arcane Accuracy
- Damage with Arcane Weapon additional properties. Damage from Touch Spells
- Ability to skip Crit in favor of keen weapon Arcane Weapon additional property
- Fighter Feats. Every bit counts
- Extra Attacks From Riposte
- Decent DC
-Shatter Defenses for damage ramp
-Doesn't need to stack Dex to hit stuff. Shatter and arcane accuracy will take care of things.
-Decent Dazzling.

This is what a real tank can be in this game. Most enemies will never hit you unless you are paralyzed or otherwise denied dex/dodge bonus to armor. Your damage will be more than fine as well. Strong all game long. Not a lot of skill points, but only thing you really need on MC is persuasion.

Improved Crit is skipped in favor of Shatter. Use keen enchant instead.

Scimitars are a viable alternative. I prefer endgame swords to scimitars, but they are roughly equal

Paladin is skipped. you get enough saves from items and priest can give you cha saves anyway.
Hey InEffect, is it possible to have a LN alignment for this build? Im trying to build something tanky while at least having a neutral alignment or should I stick with your STR scion build instead?

The difference is 2AC and LN robe is some hours of game-play later, but it won't be terrible.
