I was facing the final enemy in the Varnhold disappearance -quest, while the project to upgrade a village to a town finished. (My Capital was already a Town) The project ended with success, but no village upgraded. I believe this is because I annexed Varnhold at the same time, perhaps? Varnhold is a town.

Does this mean I've missed one chance to get a town and lost it for good? Very annoying! Can I somehow edit my savegame to turn one of my villages into a town?

I belive you have to choose which village to upgrade, as it does not randomly select one for you.

Capital first, you can upgrade many the buildings you have already created... and you get an additional what 6 ot 8 empty squares to build on, not sure.>>> like the long house to Town Hall

Capital was already upgraded, this was the second village to town upgrade. No village upgraded, so it seems the chance is now wasted.

No, it isn't wasted. I just did this today, myself. You have to go click on the town you want upgraded on the Kingdom map, adn then hit the "UPGRADE" button. It doesn't happen that way the firt time because the capitol is the only option.

There is no upgrade button. Clicking a village only shows the list of the buildings on the right, name of the village at the top. Only button available is the one taking you to the construction view.

Go to the kingdom management screen.
On the right side are options, like events, projects, advisors, regions and so on.

when you press on the map, you see the regions of your kingdom.
when you have finished the project to improve one village to a city, on of the regions should now have some " ! " on it.
press it.
now comes the option to upgrade it on the top.
press it.

Voila! your region now has a city.

I am not completly sure, if you have to have builld enough in a village to make it possible to enlarge it. In my case only the villages, which were kinda full-build were able to being upgraded.

Thank you for your advice, but it doesn't work. There is no such option available anywhere. Choosing regions doesn't have it, cliking on settlements doesn't have it. The upgrade project simply finished and gave nothing.

I had the exact same thing happen to me.

overrclocked: I had the exact same thing happen to me.
I read in some forum, that you can only upgrade a village into town, when you have at least build 6 out of 10 buildings.
Do you have done this? (And better make it 10 out of 10)

Same issue here... Considering quit the game because I don't know how to fix, I'm finishing chapter 6, no new project opens to upgrade village to town and I still don't have my capital as city. I don't understand how a game has in the title "definitive edition" and still has so many bugs.
