I just started playing this, and being familiar with the franchise, skipped the tutorial to try the campaign. I saw where the "End Turn" button was located, but after moving all of my units in the Midway-mission, the button to end the turn has been replaced by an asterisk that says "Special". There is no longer an "End Turn" button to found anywhere. What am I doing wrong? Am I not supposed to move on turn 1? If so, why am I able to?

If you can't find the end turn button then how do you find your way out of bed in the morning?

I just checked out of curiosity. The main menu is replaced by the unit menu when a unit is selected. Deselect units (right click) and the main menu will reappear. Really poor UI design, if you ask me.

I never had any issues flipping between the two menus. Seemed easy to understand.

So easy that it escaped you to actually explain the problem instead of insulting the OP. Your informative response is what prompted me to fire up a game that's just been sitting on my backlog for a long while to actually give a slightly less insulting response.

Sorry you feel butthurt about it.
I am defensive of high-quality classic games that receive unwarranted criticism of an intuitive and user-friendly UI.
Pacific General is a fantastic game, the best in the series.

I agree. It's not intuitive. The UI in this particular 5-star game is very poor. No need to make the buttons disappear and no need to have the "end turn" stuffed away on a different button bar. The whole thing feels clumsy. PG1 and FG are utterly perfect in this regard.

You don't see that button while you have a unit selected. Right-click on an empty hex and then you can pull that menu out again to reveal the end-turn button.

Allied General suffers from this too. I think with the advent of Win95, pull-down and clickable windows became all the rage and this was SSI's way of incorporating it in this series. Unfortunately, a click-fest is the side-effect.
