After the intro movie plays it displays the launcher. When I click New Game it displays the loading message and then kicks to desktop and nothing happens.

I have tried going into dxdiag and turning off sound acceleration. Anyone else have this problem or have suggestions on how to work around?

In some of the other posts on similar problems I saw mention of a file outcast.exe - I don't seem to have this file in the installation folder. (I've re-installed the game twice now). Should I have this file?

No, there's no outcast.exe file in the installation folder.

start.exe launches the game with intro, loader.exe launches the game bypassing the intro, and there's the 3 OC.exe's.

There's an OUTCAST.ini file though, maybe that's the one you mean ?

As for your problem, a few suggestions

-try to launch the game directly from loader.exe

-make sure your AV isn't stopping the game from launching

-if you are on Win7/Vista try applying 'Run as Admin' to the .exe's in the game folder or unsistall and reinstall to a folder outside C:\Program Files - make sure your AV isn't getting in the way of the install process.

-if you are on XP try lowering the sound HW accelaration

-I don't know if it could be a resolution issue. Maybe give one of the resolution patches a go ?

Got it working - thanks for the tips.

I am running on XP.

For others that might hit this - here is what I did
* Installed latest DirectX drivers
* Installed latest Geforce 6 drivers
* Installed the hi-res patch (Using 640x480) - Thanks Zenger
* Downgraded sound acceleration to basic
* Launched from Loader.exe

It's strange - I have to launch from Loader.exe directly in order for it to work.
But I am happy!

Hmmm when I launch the game via loader.exe the application runs (the process takes 50% CPU) but still nothing happens. :F

Audio acceleration turned off, new drivers, windows XP, HP notebook dv9300, 3gb ram, dual core, gf 8600gs

same with hd patch
