A.k.a. the remake that didn't get funded on Kickstarter but is going to exist anyway. There are some new screenshots: https://www.facebook.com/outcastgame/posts/1405378872810688

March 2017, they say.
I'm quite curious about this. I've only played Outcast several years ago after purchasing it here on GOG and I wonder how much they will change. I think Outcast in itself works very well, and only adding more modern graphics wouldn't help it much. But, from the screenshots, it looks like it will be a full remake, so maybe the gameplay will also change drastically, hopefully resulting in a more modern, comfortable, but not inferior experience. If they translate the feeling of exploring a completely alien world well, opening it up to a whole new player base that otherwise never would've seen it, that would be a great achievement.

I've also read that they will keep Cutter's voice-over, which I liked quite a lot.
Finally we are getting GPU acceleration. I'm getting this.

I haven't heard too much yet, but one thing I did hear is that they will redesign the controls. That's probably a good thing, even though I didn't mind them in the original game. By modern standards they felt a little slow, and the inventory system was a bit clunky. From some of the screenshots, it looks like they are faithfully recreating the original maps, so my hope is that it will have streamlined controls and new graphics while retaining the original world and play mechanics.

I agree that the original works very well; I played it for the first time around 2009 or so and I was really impressed with it.

I hadn't heard that, but it's good news! I actually really liked the voice work in the original, I hope they keep it all.

EDIT: One nice thing though is that we will still have Outcast 1.1, so even if the remake makes some changes we don't like, the original game is still preserved and available to play.

I hope it actually comes out.
I hope it's actually worth its salt. Outcast wanted a whole lot, it's basically a Tomb Raider precursor, and I really couldn't get into the original unfortunately. Hope that's possible with the remake!

I hope so too! But it may depend on exactly why you couldn't get into the original game. It sounds like they will mostly be updating the controls and graphics, while leaving the locations, story and writing the same. So if your issues related to how it felt to play, then you might like the remake better, but if you had problems with the story, level design, or other things then those probably won't change much. Explorable areas, for example, will probably still seem small compared to modern games.

Personally, I loved the original even though I played it for the first time around 2010 or so. But, I also remember trying the demo back in the 90s, so I did have some nostalgic memories of that. I thought the game was really impressive but one has to get past a few weaknesses to get to the great parts.

Never had much of a problem with the graphics, but definitely with the controls. :)
...and

Hopefully Cutter Slade does not run like a sissy princess this go around. :-)

P.S. - Outcast is in my top 5 all time favorite games.

Yeah his running animation sure is weird. After a while I found it endearing, but probably only because I liked the rest of the game so much.
Hope the producers do not screw up the way the makers of Syberia 3 did and load the game with Denuvo DRM..or any DRM.If they avoid that, it should be a natural for sale on GOG.

Apparently this was delayed to "Autumn 2017". Some rumours say upcoming November, but nothing official on it.

Also, according to rumours, as well, they *are* planning to ship Outcast: Second Contact with Denuvo, so chances of a GOG release seem to be pretty slim. I'd say they are slim even without the game being riddled with Denuvo. Outcast seems to be pretty dead here on the GOG forums, whereas it's still kind of at least on "life support" on Steam. Quiet, but not dead, at least.

Outcast is one of my biggest disappointments here on GOG, and I honestly don't think this HD remake will change that, since they won't be changing the awful story, the unfunny humour or the characters that are completely devoid of any sort of charisma. But at least I'm happy with the new art direction, Cutter Slade looks cool, at least, and now I can tell the difference between Talan, which probably makes the game easier, since I would probably know who to talk with to advance the game, considering they aren't just copies of the same two or three Talan models. The world is no longer limited by a voxel engine, so mountains now *actually* look like mountains, and not just termite mounds. It actually looks gorgeous and quite impressive. I also like the new GUI, which shows the names of the people over their heads and the context sensitive button with its appropriate action. I absolutely do not like, though, that they're keeping the same cringe-inducing original English voice acting talent. Seriously... I believe the French and German dubs are great, that's what people keep telling, but the English version is definitely some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard in a video game. Spend some money and get a half-decent team of voice actors, please... just don't keep this crappy EN dub, it really doesn't fit the new protagonist and Talan models.

Gotta say, but many of those negatives you listed aren't considered negatives by this game's fanbase, myself included. While the story won't win any awards, it's not exactly "awful", if anything it comes off more as a Stargate alternative and that's never a bad thing. The game is full of endearing moments and fun, silly dialog with fairly memorable characters, even the ones that too often share the same model. There are so few games nowadays that don't take themselves super seriously and do it well enough that it'd be a tragedy if that were to change here.

I couldn't even begin to imagine the game with different English voices. Sure, re-record with the original actors, assuming they can convey their characters as they did in the original, but new voice talent for Cutter? Forget it. I, for one, like his voice with its dry sarcastic wit.

The one thing I would like changed, though, is Cutter's running animations. Maybe some of his weapon handling animations, too, but definitely the running.

All that said, while I wish the devs success with this remake, I hate seeing Denuvo or any obtrusive DRM stuck to any game and that's certainly going to stifle my "must have it now!" enthusiasm. I'm guessing it's their publisher making that decision, if it comes with it, but doesn't make it any less annoying. Really deserves to be on GOG, too.

GalacticKnight: snip
I pretty much agree with everything GalacticKnight said up there.

I've decided to take Outcast 1.1 for a spin before I play the remake, so I can have a better comparison. Looking forward to it!
So it's out since yesterday. Outcast - Second Contact. At least on Steam...

Will it make it to GOG also?
