I am running Windows 8 64-bit.

I installed the GOG version of Outcast. After clicking New Game, the resolution changes, I see the first frame of the loading screen, and it shows "OC3.exe has stopped working"
I have this installed on a different drive than the main drive, and I have the main shortcut to run as administrator in a windows xp SP3 compatibility mode.

Nothing I have tried has fixed this issue.
This was working in Windows 7 before I upgraded to Windows 8.

I was just about to post a similar question. I have a switchable laptop where I can choose an Intel HD3000 GPU or AMD HD6650M. The AMD 6650M runs the game fine it seems. If I try to use the Intel HD3000 it crashes with the OC3.exe error.
Tried to install with the Intel GPU selected. Same problem.
Is it the Intel HD3000 drivers?

I figured out my problem. Have to start game using loader.exe instead of start.exe. Maybe your fix also.

No, I started the game using loader.exe, and it still had the same issue.

I'm running on an 8800 GT at the moment if it matters.
So, does anyone else have any ideas for me to try out?

I would really love to play this game again.
I don't know anything about Windows 8, but just to be sure: when you upgraded to Windows 8, you reinstalled the game, right? If you're trying to run the old Win 7 install it will probably not work.

I assume you did this but figured I'd check just to be sure.

Anyone else who's been using Windows 8 have any idea why Outcast would work in 7 but not 8?
I reinstalled it since I was using the Windows 8 beta (It doesn't keep my installed programs in that case).

My most recent download was as of 12/2/2012
Hi,

I have exactly the same issue.

Trying to run Outcast on a late 2010 Macbook pro with Windows 8.

So far, I tried several combinations of compatibility settings and adding exclusions for the Data Execution Prevention didn't help either.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

I really liked this game but I've never finished it.

Being able to run it on Windows 8 (like the page says it does) is important to me.
Ok, i just installed the game, and i do not have any issues with starting it (Win 8 Pro x64). What you can try:

Installing the game by rightclick on the"setup_outcast.exe" and chose "as Admin", and so start the installation (so did I).

Which driver for yout 8800GT do you use? For Win 8 it should be version 310.70

EDIT: i installed only the game, without any patches or mods.

Speaking of Nvidia drivers, they're up to 310.90 now, at least for Windows 7 and I am not 100% sure about Windows 8. The new drivers were released on January 5th. Please try installing the newer drivers and see if that helps. Also, please write to our Support department about any issues with Outcast and we'll help you out :D.
No success with newest NVIDIA drivers. :-(

I couldn't find anything helpful with procmon either.

I already wrote to the support department.
I installed using compatibility mode (2000) on the GOG installer and it put this Target in my shortcut properties:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /d /c loader ""

The Start In folder remains: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Outcast\" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG\Outcast\" depending where you installed the game.

I've had no problems since. Worth a try to see if it works for any of you having issues.

Windows 8 x64 doesn't offer Win 2k compatibility mode. I tried Win XP SP3 instead, without success. :-(
I got it working!

What got it working was: I got a new video card.

I was running an 8800 GT, then I replaced it with a 660 Ti.

It works like a charm now.
Good news ;-)
I never did think of that, but good to know, it may help others too.
