Seems that the game flickers on my configuration, I was sarching for a solution here: http://www.outcast-thegame.com/support/patchindex.htm
and they say to try to enable v-sync, only that the game DOESN'T have a v-sync feature, is forcing it on the video card panel the only viable solution?
They also say trying pressing ctrl-esc and then refocus the game window but it doesn't work at all

AltMagOnline: It is already ticked by default AND greyed out on the shortcut, with Windows changing to Windows Basic once the game is launched automatically. Everything is perfect, the sound, the launcher, the controls... the only problem is this constant, spaced out flickering. Grr!

Namur: Ah, i see. I'm sorry to say i don't know what else to suggest.
You say that option is greyed out by deafult ? I don't think it makes any difference but i wonder why it's not greyed out ay my end.

Yeah it's not even tickable, neither is windows compatability mode. I am sure it would be on the three exe's in the main directory though. It's hard to pinpoint what is going wrong here.

You guys should contact support about the flickering issue.

I think they are aware of the issue... just not with a solution in mind for single card Nvidia users with the same problem. A shame because I was hoping to review Outcast on my site sooner rather than later! I can't really imagine what could be causing this flickering, have tried everything at this point, but I guess with games this old there will always be a few PC rigs that don't gel quite as they should.
I think I fixed it! do not run outcast. hit Ctrl Alt Del and go to processes in the task manager. make sure that there are no instances of loader.exe and oc3.exe running. I had like 5 of each. then I ran the game and there was no flickering.

Can you be more specific? I checked this and there were no instances of either running at all!

are you running it from Start.exe or Loader.exe? run it from Loader.exe. beforehand make sure that no processes of Loader.exe or OC1,OC2, or OC3.exe are running. see if that works.

It wasn't greyed out on mine so I ticked them on all the exe's in the folder just in case and no dice. Thanks for the suggestion though
Yeah same problem here still despite all tried solutions. A real shame as apart from that it runs beautifully!
I have the same issue, but not consistently. First day; flickering, second; none, third; back again. I should say I've only started my computer once a day.
And another thing is that I only get the flicker when using the mouse to turn the camera. Using my keybord works just fine.
These two things had me wondering if it was something running in the background that reacted to the mouse moving and subsequently interfered with the game (which is not uncommon), but since some people got rid of the problem by turning of Catalyst A.I. I'm a bit stumped. That didn't work for me by the way.
Aanyway, I guess my tip is to try using the keyboard. If that works for people we've narrowed it down a bit.
Any update on this for Nvidia users? I still get a constant black flickering during play.
I've just been playing about with the settings in the loader and enabling cinemascope or whatever it's called seems to have fixed the problem for me but be aware it is going to make your game feel a bit small, just look at the attached file for example and that's running on a 1024x768 screen, but from what fragments of memory I have left of playing the demo all those years back it tended to be a bit funny with its resolutions.

I wish that worked for me but it doesn't! I have tried all settings turned off as well and it still flickers, close to giving up forever :-(

same problem. moving the mouse causes flickering. vista 64 radeon 4870
I dediced to buy this game from GOG(third time i bought it :P ). And it looks and plays better then ever before(also thanks to Zenger's patch. But I also have the flickering issue and in my case it's not mouse related. I tried a bunch of stuff and it can stay away for a while, but after a while it always gets back. It does seem to be less with higher loads, but i can be mistaken.

However I couldn't remember having the problem before i started tweaking the .ini files. Does anyone knows where i can get the original back, or do i have to reinstall? (forgot to backup)

Update:
I seem to have fixed it for now,

I reinstalled outcast, but that didn't help, so i though about my virusscanner(avast) and it has an animated tray icon which now and then lights up. So I disabled the animation and the black flickering seem to be gone for now... Hope this helps anyone.

I also made a direct shortcut to load .exe and under compatibility i set it to win 98/ME and under settings I flagged disable visual themes and disable display scaling on high DPI and privilevel Run as admin.

Enjoy Adelpha!
