I'm running Outcast with Wine on Linux Mint. It starts and I can play the game just fine, but when I try to change the control keys, the settings menu doesn't accept any input when I try to change a command.

It's a miracle it even works on Wine, just thank the Wine gods and play with default controls :D

Hey sofakissen, if you still have the same problem, give PlayOnLinux a try, it has an installer for the game and a graphics tweak/ controls setup wizard built-in.

Give it a look!
