I am still in those dark caves and I have now finally managed to get my gun (yay) and just encountered this big rolling boss. I saved right before but still died already another 20 or so times.

1) It is just too dark to figure out how to not get crushed by the boss. I had to turn up brightness to full (making the black bars grey) to even have a chance.

2) After getting crushed while drinking water you will have to re-equip the canteen again. Pressing "Y" constantly and he is not doing a thing before I unequip and re-equip the canteen. Of course I am doing all this while the boss is rolling towards me trying to shoot me.

Is it normal that nowadays all games are so extremely difficult? I already died about 70 times....

BTW: The ceocache discription is English only.

It's a challenging game but I don't find it "unfair." It took me a few tries to beat that first boss as well,... maybe 5.

The trick is to move your character under the spokes when it's rolling. Don't stay strictly in the middle of the pit as you will not be able to shoot out all the hit zones. When the boss starts rolling toward you just concentrate on not getting crushed. When the boss is rolling away, just blind fire at it as there is good chance you will get some hits. Last, try to avoid the mines it lays. If you concentrate on not getting crushed when it's rolling toward you and not standing near a mine when it's rolling away it should be pretty easy. My last try I only got hit by one mine or so.

Hope that helps.

Hey, thank you for the reply.
"Unfair", "Difficult", "Frustrating" - I'd say those things are pretty subjective. Dying for about 60 times imo is not actually a walk in the park or something I consider to be fun. I hoped this would be more like Limbo than Hollow Knight. Now I have yet another game that will give me headaches.

So you say that healing while in combat is impossible? That's a shame because I constantly get hit by those mines you are talking - even though I did not even realize they are mines because everything is just so dark. The whole game imo could be a little bit brighter. The light effects are nice but useless if you can only carry one iten. So I carry the gun of course with this nearly unnoticeable blue light in the dark cave. It's more or less a game of luck for me to not get crushed and I have not figured out yet how to avoid the mines. Dodging is completely useless and shield is only helping with those lasers. You did it in 5th try? Lucky you. I guess I am already at the tenth and counting. Though I am shortly before quitting this beautiful looking game. It's a shame I know but I just don't see how I could progess here.

Is it the mines that are hitting you or are you getting squished by the treads?

Oh, you did not quote it so I missed your reply - sorry.
A bit of both. If I crank up the brightness I mostly am able to avoid the crushing - at the usual brightness setting I just don't see enough to do this. The mines are a hit and miss thing ;) Meaning I cannot figure out a pattern to avoid them so far.

Hi, sorry you are having problems.

Are you using a gamepad or keyboard/mouse setup, just curious? I feel sometimes keyboard gameplay is much harder and it may be possible to miss some options.

Generally, you should be able to run between the cogs when it moves over you. The hitboxes on the cogs are fairly small. After that, watch for the flashing red lights of the bombs and a quick roll (R2) should get you out of the way. Also you can pop a shield (Xbox: Y) and as long as it's between you and a bomb you'll take no damage.

As far as the brightness, are you on a laptop possibly in a bright room? I definitely understand the game can be dark but I feel if you survived wandering around the cave and reached the boss, you've got through the worst.

Refilling health during a boss fight is hard. Better to not take hits. :P There is a hidden piece of armor in the caves but it's not easy to find. I think a lot of people are missing it so going to see if I can patch in a little visual help. Damage is divided by armor in this game and each piece adds 1 armor.

Hello,
It may just be me. I am not really good at playing action games (but on the upside I am pretty persistent trying to overcome problems I might have) but to answer your questions:

I am using a gamepad.
Flashing red lights? Did not even see something flashing - will take another look.
No, I am playing on a desktop and the room is not really bright. But is sounds great to hear that I've got through the worst already.
As I said, refilling during a fight is not just hard, it is impossible if you get crushed. After getting crushed the Y button does not work anymore until you re-equip the canteen.
I found some armor in form of an old poncho. I also found another backpack and the gloves. But one time crushing and two mines and I am dead ... I will try to see those red lights you talked about and dodge them.
The canteen issue definitely sounds like a bug, I will look at that.

Also, forgot to mention there is a brightness setting in-game in case you missed it. And again, don't forget the shield. (Y)

I am also considering a difficulty option. I didn't really a strong idea of how difficult people would find the game until launch, sorry. But it seems people do regard it as difficult. Honestly, I binge-played a lot of Cuphead during development and so I may have emulated some of that. I wanted the boss fights to keep you moving constantly. :D

Believe it or not, I am glad to hear that the game is considered to be difficult. I already thought I was just too bad to play any game here. I just went into the battle again and tried to see those mines. I managed to do a screenshot so you can see how hard they are to notice.

Yes, I noticed the brightness setting - I also used it but since it turns the black bars to grey it really seems as if the brighntess is set as intended.

Cuphead? Well, if that is the difficulty you were aiming for .... ;) I saw some videos of players destroying their gamepad over Cuphead. I really hope there aren't too many bosses in this game (given that I will ever be able to beat this one). I really want to see more of this amazingly beautiful game and not be stuck forever because of some bosses. Challenging seems to be the modern word for fun but for me it is pretty close to the word "frustrating".
But to give you all information: I am not the typical hardcore gamer - nearly 50 and the only reason I have the time now to play Orphan (and annoy you with my posts) is that I have two weeks off. So it could well be that the usual hardcore gamer is walking through your game like a breeze.

Oh. before I forget. I said it before but the content of the first geocach in the German localisation is still English. (Don't know if it is supposed to be this way).

Translation should be as follows
"A photo of a newly wed couple. On the back it reads "The Otts, 12-12-08."
"Ein Foto eines frisch verheirateten Paares. Auf der Rückseite steht: "Die Otts, 12.12.08."

"A detailed model LMS engine hand built from brass. The initials I.A.E. are etched into the nameplate."
"Ein detailiertes, handgemachtes Model einer LMS Lokomotive aus Messing. Die Initialen I.A.E. sind in das Namensschild eingeprägt."

And while we are talking about localisation: time and date format of the save file is also English only.
Of course those localisation issues are not that important but I think it would be nice for you to know.

84 deaths ....

I nearly got him. Only two fingers health bar left. However I was unable to find the last spot where I had to hit him. Curious if I will finish him before I reach the 100 death counter.

I think the treads hit the same place with every roll that the boss does. So if you want to get under all the spots, make sure you always situate your character a little closer along the ground. Also, don't forget to shoot at it as it's rolling away.

I managed to figure out that the best way to get him hit quite afew times is running behind him. However of course that means I might or might not run into the mines. If I stand still and try to hit him I only manage to hit him one or two times. But for now my fingers hurt and it is late here in Germany so the boss has another night to live and roll and I hope I won't dream about exploding mines and annoying rolling bosses ;)

Thanky ou all for the help you are trying to give me here. Much appreciated.
84! I will take a look at this boss again, hitboxes, etc . But to warn you, they don't get easier. :P

I've got a baaaad feeling about this ... ;)

btw: I also died a lot in the caves since I though I had to go through every guarded cave until I finally figured out that I need to use the torch. I just replied the intro and remembered how beautiful this game is. I need a god mode :D

I DID IT!

With all the information out of this thread I figured out a more or less safe way to kill this sucker.
When he first appears I run after him until I can nearly see him. Turn on shild and waiting for him to roll over me (that's a thing that only takes a bit of practice). After he rolled over me I only turn of the shield and wait until the mines have exploded. No shooting yet since it will destroy the shield as well. After the mines have exploded I shoot at the boss and spread my fire, try to hit some of those lights. Let him roll over me and immediately again turn on the shield. Rinse and repeat and maybe changing location a few times to get all spots. Takes a bit longer than running and dodging but at least it worked.
