Not in common persé. But it is a RPG with strategy elements, post apokalyptic, it uses the same isometric view. I dont know really, havnt played Fallout that much
Wow Fenixp! Thanks for pointing out those games to me, I was unaware that they all came from a czech publishing house. I've played an enjoyed all of those games. I'll have to check out the UFO games. If I remember correctly they are games similar to the XCom games, correct? I seem to remember a thread in another forum I frequent about the game, but can't seem to find it at the moment.
Also, qwsed, I believe that if the UFO games are the same I am thinking of they are quite different from Fallout/2. If I had to compare them to any game currently on GoG I would say they are closest to Jagged Alliance 2. More of a tactical RPG really. They differ from Jagged Alliance 2 in the fact that your troopers (at least in XCom) are really pretty expendable until you get to the later levels. Even when you get there your troopers can die with an unlucky shot/ambush. It is more of a Simcity game in the fact that you are mostly concerned with the larger picture (your base and its offshoots) than the smaller picture (leveling up your troops). I could be completely mistaken though, Fenix will have to confirm/deny what I'm saying.
*Edit* Ah! But I have not heard of Spellcross. I'll have to go check it out.

I'm not sure what UFO's are you talking about, because this applies to new and old ones either :D
I guess this will be for the best:
UFO: Aftermath
UFO: Aftershock
UFO: Afterlight
They are pretty inconsistent games, meaning someone loves them, someone hates them. I'm in the first group, because I've played all three and I find them pretty good. Not great, not awesome, but really good and worth playing.
So far I must be honest I don't really like OW. The odds are stacked too heavily against you. None of your units know how to run, some of them can crouch and some can't, making it impossible to save any of your good soldiers in combat because he and your scientist will surely die. In general the game requires me to restart missions until I figure out the "correct" way to beat them. It's so far just kinda frustrating. I guess this is what I get for liking strategy games but actually really sucking at strategic planning.
I will keep playing though seeing as how I'm only on the 4th US mission. There are some things to like though, the overall pace is kinda slow, which is good for me. The story is pretty interesting, and the rpg elements of your AI brethren don't quite make me care if they live or die (bad, annoying voice acting) but at least it adds something to deepen the game a bit.
Maybe I will like it more as it progresses. Still, of the games I have from GoG (OW and Hostile Waters) Hostile Waters is far superior.

The odds arn't against you unless you sit around waitng for the enemy without building a base and going for you objective. You just need the occational bunker and/or more to a certain location. No units run i at all, ever. Its kinda annoying yes but hey ^^. When you fight with the enemy you DONT charge ahead... You dont get waltz foward an enemy in a middle of a firefight (what if you had a company of 30 men an charged a bunker heads on... that would be the end of you). This game is by far the most realistic RTS i have played (exept for CoH) since you have a finite amount of men.
The pace is slow yes, i think of it like "its a new world and things are lurking around ever corner" :P, the story is great imo. I agree tho kill the soldiers first ^^, You even get medals for killing everything (more xp). I do not however agree with you that the voiceacting is bad. Only a certain few has bad voiceacting.

Yea I have played it a bit more today and am getting used to it. Like I said, I enjoy strategy games, I just suck at them, and this one plays a bit differently. And yes I figured out very quickly not to just charge in and hope for the best, its just that I always lose the first few times I play a new level simply because if you plan out some sort of assault and it goes awry then you're done because you can't recruit any more guys. Your scientists always get targeted first, so you can only really heal guys if you managed to kill everything in your line of sight. There really is no way to effectively scout things as far as I can tell in the game, leading me to horribly miscalculate the enemy strength in a given location. The only way around this is to figure out exactly where the enemy line of sight ends and just sit your units there and fire at it until it dies. Then move in a bit until you spot the next object and repeat. I might point out that a real tank or gun placement can see for miles and having your guys move back 20 feet would not save you in real life.....you would be followed and exterminated.
But not to argue, I never said the game was terrible.....I guess I'm just transitioning. Once I get a bit farther my opninion could easily change.
Oh but there is a good scout unit ^^ But i dont think you've gotten it yet. You should have tho ^^
Still continue playing and do geurilla tactics with your men, tanks (hit and run)
Mix up a few vehicles (good vehicle is almost always better than good soldier... Especially when you can get your soldier in/out of vehicle whenever you need. Oh, and radar technology gives you great scounting unit: Just mount it on fast hull. You can always pause the game and give the orders when needed, so no rush, think of what you're doing, you can even pause the game at the start of the level and think of where you want to place your buildings...
Ive been trying it out with Vista and i find it to work perfectly. I dont know what your problems can be but its working with vista.
I just want to know how to change the resolution :P Since i/we dont get the Launcher app with this game because we dont have an original disc i can't change the res.

Lucky you.... :S
About the resolution...the GOG version has launcher, just run the owar.exe directly from the owar folder (the shortcut has a "/run" parameter, that makes the program start up without the launcher). If this does not work, try the latest patch and launch it then.
If none of the obev work or you want a res. higher than 1024x768, then use parameter customres <widh> <height>.
I'm fairly jaded as jaded gamers go. From the 286 days to present. I've got pretty much all the platforms. Nowdays, I can barley even finish new game titles. Not due to any difficulty, but just because its all so tired and done to death. Lazy programming and shiny graphics to substitute good gameplay.
I decided to try Original War just because its grouped together with classics like MAX (1) and Fallout (2). I'm so glad I did. The game play mechanics, the slight RTS touch, the emphasis of tactical fights, all with cheesy sci-fi plot and dialogue. It's just plain old fun.
Sure there are a few small glitches in game play, but it doesn't detract from the fact that O W is the most fun I've had with my pants on all weekend.
